Isn't Sam Malone based on Sam McDowell?  Like Malone's fictional career, McDowell's career was also cut short by alcoholism.

Always liked the WashBag, as Herb Caen used to call it.  George Wendt, who played "Norm" on Cheers loved the WashBag and their softball team, Les Lapins Sauvages.

Ted was in my class.  He didn't graduate -- left sometime after Christmas break freshman year.  CI might know more.

My brother in law tended bar there for a bit. One of my camera assistants had his own stool at the end of the bar all the way down the right side. We sometimes had to peel him off the stool and toss him into a cab. One of the great hangout places.

Apparently, Danson asked out a girl named Beth who worked in the Stanford cafeteria.  She was an actress, and essentially said "love to hang out, I'm going to an audition."  Ted accompanied her, the only way to stay in the audition room was to actually audition.  He was hooked, said it was not as good as basketball, but he got laughs.  He backed up his station wagon to the theater, and stayed.  That was that.
