Interesting guy, and I take it, not your typical JC transfer. He had a 4.0 at the JC, took difficult courses, was three time All-Academic league selection in high school. Played for Balboa Bay, which is a superb club. Went to UCLA -- his dad's school -- but he'd always had Stanford in mind. Spent an academic year in France. Was a student Senator.

He's a lefty, looks like he plays oppo, but apparently was recruited as a setter.
Last interesting point...drops the comment that Stanford is seeking more transfers.

Interesting article and seems like a great kid. One thing I wanted to point out though was the following:
"Once again, higher powers aligned for Dickey as Stanford -- a school with only a 4% acceptance rate (second-toughest in the nation) -- was not only looking for a setter for their volleyball program,
but the campus as a whole wanted to bring in more transfer students, so both of these opportunities played well into Dickey's favor."
There is no source or anything to back up this sort of throwaway line. I'm not going to put much stock into it.

I wonder if they are anticipating some deferrals in their freshman class and are making up for it with transfers? In recent years Stanford has seemed to have little desire to take transfer students, usually taking only somewhere between 20 and 30. Given that the transfer acceptance rate in recent years has hovered around 1.5-2%, hats off to him!

I mean, on reddit people are actively advising incoming freshman to take a gap year, and depending on whether circumstances allow it I'd advise the same. Can you imagine doing freshman year remote? It would be horrible.
