Great sports movies - Phogge - 05-24-2020

My favorite three:

Hoosiers
Slap Shot
The Natural

RE: Great sports movies - BobK - 05-24-2020

The Spirt of Stanford The Frankie Albert movie

Horse Feathers Marx Brothers

RE: Great sports movies - 82lsju - 05-24-2020

The Pride of the Yankees
Senna
Rush
Le Mans
Grand Prix
Caddyshack
Rocky
Hoop Dreams
A League of Their Own
Miracle

RE: Great sports movies - Mick - 05-24-2020

In no particular order, my Favorite Sports Movies:
Miracle
Rocky
Chariots of Fire
Hoosiers
I, Tonya
Tin Cup
Dodgeball.  Yup.  Sue me.
Talladega Nights
Caddyshack
The Natural
The Longest Yard (I)
A League of Their Own
Seabiscuit
The World's Fastest Indian
Cinderella Man
Bend it Like Beckham (on the fence, but it had a Santa Clara U. reference, so I had to keep it in)
Eight Men Out
The Color of Money
Breaking Away
Raging Bull
Bad News Bears (1)
Ford v. Ferrari

The List of Popular Sports Movies That I Just Didn't Care For:
Field of Dreams.  My dad gets a big lump in his throat when he watches this.  I just want to puke.
Rudy
The Longest Yard (remake)
Bad News Bears (remake)
42.  Not that I thought it was bad, it just could have been much, much better.
The Greatest Game Ever Played
Invincible
Friday Night Lights and Remember the Titans.  I played HS football in that era.  Wee bit o difference between Virginia and California, I'd say; and Texas football is just nuts to me.
White Men Can't Jump
McFarland USA.  I really wanted to like this, having run track in California in high school.
Jerry Maguire
Slap Shot
The Hurricane
Warrior
Any Dead Hero movie; e.g., Pride of the Yankees, Brian's Song, Bang the Drum Slowly (yes, I know, I'm unAmerican)
Rush
Million Dollar Baby
Bull Durham
the Wrestler

Funny, for me:

Hoosiers. Seabiscuit.  Miracle. Field of Dreams.  The Natural. Rush. Caddy shack. Not a movie, but The Last Dance is terrific.

RE: Great sports movies - Phogge - 05-24-2020

The Babe Comes Home because it stars the greatest athlete of all time and my pop was an AD on it.

Secretariat.
Seabiscuit
A Day at the Races. “Get your tootsie frootsie ice cream.”
Tin Cup
The Texas Western movie
Gladiator
The chariot scene in Ben Hur. Not the silent flick with Francis X Bushman or the recent POS but the Charlton Heston film.

Lex, I’m confused. Miracle on Ice was the HBO program that I shot some interviews for and “Miracle”was the Kurt Russell movie. Assume it was the latter.

RE: Great sports movies - Spiny_Norman - 05-24-2020

I have enjoyed many of the ESPN 30 For 30 documentaries, but The Two Escobars stands above all of them. Really outstanding movie that just happens to include sports.

The HBO sports documentaries are very well-done too.

RE: Great sports movies - WBB fan - 05-24-2020

Great lists. For me, add

Downhill Racer
Personal Best
Pride of the Yankees
The Hustler
Phar Lap -- great Australian horse racing movie

National Velvet -- not a favorite of mine at all, but it did start a major movie star career; is it a sports movie? Well, maybe

I think Phogge may have shot some of those.

Great call on The Two Escobars. Truly outstanding film. The one on Todd Marinovich was really outstanding too.

At the risk of straying too far afield of the topic (which I clearly am), I just streamed the updated docu-series called The Staircase -  no tie to sports. Truly fantastic documentary.

Correct BC. HBO dumped their sports doc department about 10 years ago. They still do the occasional sports doc but it’s under the wing of Sheila Nevins’ unit. Don’t know if she has retired. Contributed to a couple of Peabody’s.

RE: Great sports movies - PVTree - 05-24-2020

I enjoyed:

Slap Shot
Caddyshack
Bend it Like Beckham
The Natural
The Bad News Bears
Jerry McGuire
The Blind Side
Wimbledon
Hidalgo
Rocky I
Rocky II
Space Jam (Mike can do no wrong)
Game Plan (Disney movie with the Rock as a QB...hit a soft spot)

RE: Great sports movies - Red80 - 05-24-2020

Check out a movie called "Blood Sport". It's a 1973 made for TV movie starring Gary Busey and Ben Johnson. It's about an obsessive, meddling father who has groomed his son to be a pro QB since childhood. Larry Hagman plays the role of Busey's HS coach, and he's one sleazy character. More of a movie about a father/son relationship than football. It'll make you think about Todd Marinovich and his father. It was filmed in Woodland, Ca. I'm sure the dvd is still available for purchase.

I loved Major League

Maybe it's too recent, but I think Free Solo was a great sports movie

RE: Great sports movies - Phogge - 05-24-2020

You might want to see “Solo.” Mike Hoover Of Gunga Dan fame won an Academy Award. Climbed and set remote control FILM cameras. Climbed down, activated the cameras and climbed back up.
