Phogge referenced playing a baseball dice game as a kid. I played several sports games. Start-o-Matic baseball. Pretty good game. Sports Illustrated had a college football game that took the best year from each team. So you could play, for example, the 1970 Stanford team vs ‘ 67 Michigan State. (Teams were from 60’s and early 70’s). But the best board game I played, and nothing came close, was APBA. Tremendous baseball board game.

I had the SI game.I played Stanford vs USC with Dick Threlkeld waiting out the Angela Davis trial or maybe in a large camper in front of the Hearst mansion while waiting for Patty to jump out of a taxi and into her dad’s arms (fat chance). I am ahead the entire game but it’s nip and tuck and Dick tosses an 80 yard TD pass on the last play. Aside from sending our runners out for chow every day it was the most exciting day of the coverage.
I also had Foto Electric Football that had a reveal lit screen and a bunch of plays. Also the True Action where you lined up the tiny players on both sides and then turned on the juice. It played out as a scatter drill. Got boring so our gang hit the streets for a rough game on the asphalt. Still have it.
There was a best seller in the 60’s called “The Universal Baseball Association, J Henry Waugh Proprietor” by Coover that dealt with dice baseball and its effect on a grown man’s life.

The best board football game ever is Football Strategy, Avalon Hill. Originated in 1962, it's been revised a few times. Simple yet brilliant design, it puts one player's play-calling ability against the other. It basically consists of a board with 20 plays, and 10 defensive cards featuring different alignments, strengths and weaknesses. There's no chance involved, either you outguess your opponent or you don't.
I still play the game occasionally with friends and I'm always struck by how intense the competition gets. When I was in college I introduced the game to some friends and they were all immediately hooked, literally waiting in line to play the winner.
I recommend it highly.

We had the electric football game in the 50s.
Brother and I played little men Baseball
Bought 4” players and bats and made a spitball the ball. We hit but our wrist had to stay on the ground
Not a board game but in the jungles of Vietnam, thankfully their were dull times, I had track meets in my head. Stanford vs SJS, Cal , USC

I remember playing electronic hand-held games. My favorites were from Coleco. I had football and basketball. I had another one for baseball.
