I completely missed this Kevin Gemmell article -

I guess that by now most of you read Kevin Gemmell's Stanford blog on ESPN.com. I want to post a link to this article about Shaw's and the team's reaction to Skov going down. Unlike most articles, which spell doom, gloom, and the near certain collapse of the Cardinal defense, this one includes quotes from Shaw and the team.
http://espn.go.com/blog/stanford-football/post/_/id/873/shaw-talks-skov-loss
Things I like:
- Other players seem to be stepping up their leadership in the wake of the injury
- Shayne will continue to attend meetings and provide his enthusiasm, leadership, advice and experience as an "extra coach and extra motivator"
- (From other articles) Shaw gives an almost snarky reply, "We're not going to stop playing" when asked for the seven hundred and fifty ninth time what the team is going to do without Skov
Taken together, these items seem to say to me that defense will be even more edgy than it would have been had Skov not gone down.

Edgy is good.
Especially when your defense is predicated on getting to and punishing the ballcarrier before he reaches the line of scrimmage*
* (also one reason why the secondary looks a bit worse at times--the linebackers have been deployed to destroy rather than to cover.)
