The Night Watchman - Redrum - 09-24-2011

Alternating Az. St.  /  USC    and  Oregon/ Arizona.

Just based on a half of play glad we don't have Az. State in our division.  Handling USC at the half 21=9,  holding them to field goals.,

Oregon in the first half looks,  ummm  (you fill in any synonym for scary, impressive, awesome  you want)  I hope that Arizona was just stumbling around in some post-Stanford daze.  They certainly weren't nearly as good as they were against us early.
But there's always a chance that Oregon makes everybody (except LSU) look like that.

I probably won't watch any more.  It's late back here in CDT  and dreaming about werewolves and  taking law school exams naked seem less scary than watching Oregon and ASU.

Re: The Night Watchman - washingtonismoney - 09-24-2011

ASU looks good offensively but let's keep in mind this isn't the the University of South Central defense of old. Their defense looks mediocre--and, again, ignore the fact that they're wearing Trojan uniforms and they're pretty comparable to 'Zona. Who's better? Foles or Barkley? Criner or Woods? Neither have much of a running game...

Edit: About Oregon. The thing about comparing Oregon to us is their shock-and-awe effect distorts the perceptions. Yards per play wise--Oregon is averaging 6.8 yards per play when they have the ball and allowing 4.76 yards per play. We had 8.1 yards per play and allowed 5.3 yards per play. That's broadly pretty similar.

And now Arizona is giving Oregon more of a game than they gave Stanford in the second half.

Re: The Night Watchman - FarmBoy - 09-24-2011

If they weren't already, the Trojan faithful must really be questioning the Kiffen hiring at this point. 11 consecutive wins against ASU in a row, gone. Matt Barkley, he who was crowned by the great Pete himself as the next great USC QB, looking absolutely human. Sideline reports talking about how the team lacks energy. One player on USC defense accounting for THREE personal fouls (how dumb is that guy?) I am much happier that we play USC than ASU, this year.

And Oregon's offense looks as frightening as last year. But the defense looks weaker. I'm predicting a another shootout a la the 2009 match up.

Re: The Night Watchman - oman - 09-25-2011

I think we will be playing ASU this year.

Re: The Night Watchman - washingtonismoney - 09-25-2011

Oregon's final yards per play numbers: 7.7 on offense (including a very poor 5.1 yards per pass attempt) and 5.2 yards per play allowed. Broadly similar to ours, though with all the injuries we had I'll be biased and declare our effort superior.

ASU vs USC had 5.7 yards per play both gained and allowed. USC's defense doesn't impress me much, though it has the most proven coaches there.

Funny thing - Redrum - 09-25-2011

I turned off the computer before I actually stopped  watching.  Saw USC nose into the lead and actually play recognizable USC offense.  Figured I'd find all sorts of snarky comments about my stupid assessment of ASU when I logged on this morning.  But I was tired and it was late.  Wow.  Never figured that ASU would just mop up the place with the Trojans.  Yikes.

Ducks QB Thomas seems to have regressed this year. Very inconsistent with frequent bad misses of open receivers on intermediate routes and not really close on the deep passing game. Most of their success has come from screens, swings, wheel routes -  short stuff with nice YAC by their backs. Their top 2 WRs gone from 2010 and they have no Owusu analog ready to plug in as a #1.

Their Oline is continuing to improve, and based on last night LaMichael James has his mojo back. However if some team sells out to stop the run and has decent cover corners to go 1:1 they could be vulnerable. Kal & ASU - their next 2 games - might qualify, but both play in Eugene, which is tough. Worth going to school on.
