MGolf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-11-2020

This week, the men are competing in the US Amateur at Bandon Dunes. A smaller Stanford contingent than last week at the Women's Amateur.

Three Stanford players entered the 36 hole stroke play qualifying yesterday - David Snyder, Henry Shimp and incoming frosh Michael Thorbjornsen. World #10 amateur Karl Vilips (also an incoming frosh) was not able to compete because of a hand injury. He is caddying for Thorbjornsen.

Of the 3, Thorbjornsen qualified for match play with 68-72. Snyder just missed the cut by one shot. He played his final 10 holes in +4 to fall below the cut line. Shimp never got things going. He shot 78-79.

This course proved brutal for some many top players.

Those cut, with their world amateur ranking:

Piercson Coody, 7
Cole Hammer, 16
Wiiliam Mouw, 17
Aaron Eckroat, 22
Noah Goodwin, 44
Trevor Phillips, 54
Travis Vick, 58
Clayton Claycomb, 65
Parker Coody, 69

Wow.

Thorbjornsen's good run continues. He knocked off Trevor Phillips' brother Trent 3 and 2 in the round of 64 today.

Btw, Hulk, William Mouw did qualify for match play. He is seeded 34th.

Among other casualties in the stroke play qualifying - Andy Ogletree, last year's Amateur champion.

RE: MGolf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-13-2020

Thorbjornsen advanced to the round of 16 with a 4 and 2 over Hugo Townsend from Boise St. Thorbjornsen was 5 under for the 16 holes that he played.

He will face Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira from TCU this afternoon with the winner moving on to the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Thornbjornsen's -5 was second only to Osborne's (SMU) -6.
He, Osborne and Pinto were the only players not to post at least one bogey.

Only three of the players remaining rank in the WAGR top 100:
Hagestad (#15, a 29-year old), Wiiliam Mouw (#17, Pepperdine), and Cameron Sisk (#39, ASU).

This is a very odd US Am.

Thorbjornsen 3up through 12 in the Round of 16

RE: MGolf - US Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-13-2020

Our guy was low net on the day, -9.  Played 29 holes before his first bogey.

Next lowest net was -6, then three at -3.

Having Karl Vilips on his bag might be helping.

It's a brobdingnagian help. Apparently the two are very close friends having played juniors for something like 10 years.

Won 3&2 today to advance QFs tomorrow

Thorbjornsen hits the ball out of round.

On the 388 yard tenth, he put his drive 35 feet short of the flag.

On the 543 yard 13th, he hit driver, sand wedge.

Drive, sand wedge.

Bandon Dunes is stunning.  I've never been there.  My dad says it's his favorite course setup.  Looks great on television.

Some stunning holes, and Kidd has gone in and fixed the several that needed fixing.  The complaints, which are few, are over the routing, a lot of weird long walks.  Trails, a Coore/Crenshaw design, is brilliantly routed and has six holes I can picture vividly---two great part threes, that famously wicked drivable par four, and its terrific 15th and 18th--despite playing there just once.  And it says a lot for that course even to be mentioned with the others, considering that Trails never gets within half a mile of the ocean.

I may be partial to it, a little, because my middle son did a lot of the shaping.  Golf Course Atlas gave him major praise for it.

Old MacDonald always seems contrived to me, but perhaps because I have known  all along what Urbana was trying to do, and because he's always seemed two steps too funky for me.  But the course makes a strong contrast to the other courses, just as Trails makes to the two Dunes courses.  Five similar, verging on identical, courses would not be very interesting.

To me, the stunner of Bandon stunners is The Sheep Ranch.  It's brilliantly conceived; Coore somehow figured out how to optimimize the shots to, and views of, of the ocean, two of them to infinity greens.

It's high on our list for golf travel next year or year after. So is Whistling Straits/Blackwolf Run which was supposed to be this year but son's college graduation in Milwaukee got canceled, rescheduled, and then canceled again.

And then there's the Australia & Ireland golf trips...maybe someday

RE: MGolf - US Amateur - Hulk01 - 08-14-2020

Our guy had four birdies on the front nine, but not a surprise.  He had 13 front nine birdies (four on #3 and on #9) over his first five rounds.

On the back, he wants to birdie 13 and avoid bogeys on 12 and 15. He's bogeyed both of those twice.

RE: MGolf - US Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-14-2020

Thorbjornsen's touch left him today. He had 2 double bogeys, 2 additional 3 putt bogeys on the back 9 and made too many mistakes to overcome a solid opponent. He lost 1 up.
