Always respected Lute, from his days in Iowa... Although hated losing to his Zona teams. RIP.

Mr. Olson was one helluva coach.

And by all accounts an even better human being.

Agreed, generally speaking.  I would add NCAA Hall of Fame coach Ralph Miller of OSU, who was pretty good.  Hard to recruit there and he took OSU to the NCAA's eight times in 20 seasons.  Was NCAA coach of the year in 1981-2.

Tough week for HoF basketball coaches.  John Thompson, the first Black coach to win an NCAA mens basketball championship just passed.  Rest in Peace.

Cal fans might have something to say about their national championship coach, Pete Newell.

Pete Newell's son Pete Jr. coached at Santa Cruz high for thirty years.  He was a young guy when my team played against them.  At the time, ours were the worst two teams in the league.  In 2005, Pete Jr. won a state D3 championship, finishing 36-1.

I think most UCLA fans are OK with leaving national championship coach Jim Harrick off of the list.

Wooden not quite the gentleman off the court.

And one last time: SIT DOWN LUTE. Amen.

Sat with 5 feet of him several times in the old Pavilion
Quiet but forceful toward the refs. Which is an understatement

Pete Newell was not only a great coach, he was a great teacher. His Big Man Camp - back when a  post was actually used, was legendary.  Newell way more influential than Montgomery. Not even close, actually.

I went to an event in SF honoring Olson.  Tolbert was the MC.  Had some hilarious stories.  By mere good fortune I sat next to Olson for the dinner.  Gracious as could be. Arizona was undefeated and No 1 at the time (this was 2013 I think) Olson flat out said they were not a championship level team.  Poor shooting would doom them.  He was right.  Cal beat them the next day.

I heard Tolbert talking about his recruiting prowess.  Moms LOVED him. Jay Bills commented that he committed to Duke.  But his Mom committed to Arizona.  Very classy guy.
