Kerry Walsh Jennings - lex24 - 09-08-2020

She posted on Instagram. Said an unattributed quote on masks [“This has not been enforced it’s been consented to”]inspired her.  She wrote that she stands with those that have been sick or seen loved ones die due to the virus, but contends wearing mask and other public health measures “ have crushed our society, people’s livlihoods, our children’s spirit & fabric of our world.  We have become a country & a world estranged from each other & it’s more deeply unhealthy than any virus could ever be.”

Unfortunate that she put this in context of wearing a mask.  Because some of what she says has some points that are worthy of discussion.

Beyond stupid Kerri. There my discussion is over. Poor poor pitiful me

RE: Kerry Walsh Jennings - Phogge - 09-08-2020

Wearing a mask means that at the least you are trying to show that you can be trusted. I am tired of people claiming that this means the end of freedom. Horseshit. This is a team effort exactly like eleven guys following the script, doing their jobs and pushing the ball into the end zone. Or Misty Trainer setting Jennings for a crushing spike. Grow TFU.

RE: Kerry Walsh Jennings - 2006alum - 09-08-2020

Proof that even a Stanford degree cannot inoculate one against stupidity. Funny that despite similar mask requirements during the Spanish flu epidemic, society was not crushed and the spirit of the world survived. This too will pass.

Unfortunate to say the least. Masks and social distancing and sanctions against large gatherings today are NOT sacrifices. Those who imply otherwise reveal character traits you don't want to be known for. Especially Stanford sports celebrities. BTW, I doubt the virus pays attention to Instagram, or any other social grievance platform in overdrive today.

RE: Kerry Walsh Jennings - OutsiderFan - 09-08-2020

Wearing a mask has ZERO impact on anything or anyone, other than stopping virus spread.

I was at a neighbor's for a gathering yesterday. Everyone wore a mask other than when eating and we ate outside. It was the opposite of the tragedy KW-J might have assumed it to be.

RE: Kerry Walsh Jennings - BostonCard - 09-08-2020

Here's her post:

I think the sad thing is that a lot of things such as restrictions of large gatherings, closures of businesses, and, at the extreme, shelterr-in-place/lockdown., are much larger infringements on freedom compared to compulsory mask-wearing, but that getting the disease under control, using less restrictive measures, including mask-wearing, will enable the removal of those restrictions more quickly.

It is disappointing that wearing a mask has become such a symbolic thing.  We don't complain about signs that say "No shirt, no shoes, no service" as taking away our freedoms to not wear a shirt or shoes, but I think it is unfortunate that mask-wearing has become such a symbol.

If she continues with not wearing a mask, it could cause problems for her qualifying for and participating in the Olympics.

RE: Kerry Walsh Jennings - BobK - 09-08-2020

Former Stanford indoor star Alex Klineman is a favorite to make the Olympics not Kerri

RE: Kerry Walsh Jennings - old spanish trail - 09-08-2020

So terribly unfortunate. Leadership counts.

RE: Kerry Walsh Jennings - Goose - 09-08-2020

Things would be so much more natural if we didn't wear clothes. Wearing clothes has made us so estranged from each other. Yes, this is sarcasm. But in truth, a mask is just another item of clothing, worn for the same reason, i.e. to protect ourselves from the environment. Granted, the mechanism may be different, but the purpose is the same.

This is funny because when we were discussing the issue last night after the story ran on the 10:00 news, my wife said people don't seem to be overly concerned with the freedom taken away when people have to wear pants in public.  I pointed out that as a beach volleyball player, Ms. Walsh-Jennings is minimally compliant.

I posted my views on her position on her Facebook page but will leave that out of this side of the Cardboard.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Could have crushed this pandemic by the end of May if masks/distancing had been observed.  Could be nearly back to normal now.  But no, we're going to drag this pandemic out and keep the wildfire burning (pandemic) because people want the right to spread kindling all around instead of digging fire breaks.  It's really given the terms "freedom" and "patriot" bad reputations.

Totally agree with this part.

Only about half agree with this part. The idiots who think they have the right to do whatever they want are about 50% of the problem. The other 50% of the problem are people who can't/won't isolate when they are COVID-19 positive, won't cooperate with contact tracking, or can't/won't quarantine when they are contacts. Put those two together and you cover it.

Just noticed that KWJ posted a follow-up on Instagram (see below). Umm, I'm not sure she made the situation any better for herself...

After further consideration, I now believe that this woman has absolutely nothing to say that's worthy of discussion. Her outsize prominence is based solely on her ability to play the game of volleyball exceptionally well. This says all you need to know about our culture and times.

Totally agree with this part.

What do you guys mean by "nearly back to normal?"

There might be more things open . . . for a while, anyway . . . but everyone would still have to social distance and wear masks, right?

This is what I don't understand about "crushing the curve" arguments (aside from the fact that the US was so far behind in recognition and response that it wasn't going to happen without even more drastic measures).

What's the end game of "crushing the curve?"  Everyone back to school with no masks?  Everyone back to bars and indoor dining with no masks?  I don't think that's correct.

You can say "well, we could be doing more stuff with masks."  Okay.  But again, what is the differentiatior for "doing more" or "doing less" - other than we are always not doing "enough" to "do more?"

That's why I always come back to . . . (I'm not even going to say it).

BTW, you can "do more" now - if you're willing to be responsible and take appropriate action, where necessary.  See ND's dashboard.  56 active cases (550+ recovered) in a student population of 8600+  (.6%).  And no hospitalizations.  So many folks here said going to college in-person is foolhardy, reckless, etc.  Maybe.  And maybe that will prove out.  OTOH, maybe ND will "gut it out" and show folks that you can go to school.  So far, they seem to be doing a pretty good job.  I hope they are able to get through it okay.

RE: Kerry Walsh Jennings - fullmetal - 09-08-2020

Oh come on teejers...there are various enforceable restrictions on gathering size, indoor occupancy %s, etc etc that could be relaxed if community transmission were much reduced and if testing/contact tracing were highly capable of quick detection and early warning.

I'm not sure if meaningful college football stadium occupancy would be advisable even with masks + every-other-seat distancing + low community prevalence/transmission, but it would at least be in the conversation.  Restaurants/live music venues would certainly see a better lifeline.  I think public K-12 schools could be back to in-person with masks and more prevalent outdoor options/rotations.

Although new case counts are rebounding in various spots outside the US, we've seen life in countries with sober public health responses return to a semblence of normalcy not currently seen in the US.  It just takes a team effort.

Actually, it is pretty much that way in lots of places. Remember that Korea had an outbreak at a club and had to close the bars for a while? The issue is that to do this you have to get the case count real low and you have to be able to contact trace and isolate/quarantine every case that you subsequently do have. You are still going to be operating with a razor thin margin of error, but several nations have managed to do that.

We couldn't do that in the USA because a) we didn't have and did not develop "adequate" contact tracing and tracking capability and b) we never got the number of cases down to the point that what little contact tracking and tacking we did have had a prayer of containing the disease. It may be argued that there are several things about our society that make it impossible to do this. It is probable (IMHO) that even places like Korea will eventually fail. However, if there is a vaccine before that failure happens, there will be no failure. That was ostensibly the plan for the USA as well, but the politicians gave up on that idea really quick. In retrospect, they were probably right. We weren't going to do it anyway. Too bad they didn't just say that. Now we are incrementally approaching full Sweden (with even less compliance) whether we planned it that way or not.
