That is sad.  Thousands of undergraduates knew him from Bio 21, a memorable course.  An outstanding teacher.  And he was a big Stanford football fan as well, as he sat in the row in front of me.

Each day of 2020 becomes worse and worse. I apologize for adding this, but my mother passed away February 19 of this year.  She was 95 and lived a full life.  My brother, sister, and I won life's lottery by having her as our mom.

Simoni's Bio 21 in the spring of my freshman year excited me like no other course had to that point. As soon as I got back from lecture I'd do the homework. I remember thinking, I should pay attention to my reaction, so I majored in Bio as a result.

I still remember him explaining why when we are buying hair shampoo we are paying almost entirely for perfume, packaging and marketing; he just used soap on his hair and I still do on what little of my hair remains.

Very sad news.  I had a few opportunities to interact with him in administrative settings and he was always warm, personable and down-to-earth, with great insights and passion for the university, plus, as Embo noted, he was a big football fan.  Here's a little clip from his final lecture:

Sorry for your loss, Embo.  May her memory be a blessing.

I remember taking Bio 41 with Dr. Simoni (who funnily enough co-taught it with a Dr. Simon). I vividly remember Oregon week. He told us in no uncertain terms that although USC, Cal, UCLA, etc were rivals, he absolutely HATED Oregon. He had us yelling Beat Oregon chants in class. It was many years until we finally beat Oregon and made him happy.

That’s very sad. I don’t think there was anyone who was more of a Stanford guy, for all the good reasons, than he was.

Simoni's dad was an alum. He almost went to Stanford but the price was too expensive back in the day (no stellar financial aid) despite an uncle promising to pay for it. However, he was through and through a Stanford guy. I remember going to his last lecture and it felt like something special was in the air. I can't imagine any other prof getting a send-off like this one.
