Understandable, but she will be missed. Sad that we didn't get to give her a proper sendoff, either.
If only that #@@# pandemic office hadn't been eliminated...

Opting out is totally understandable.
But if she opts out doesn't she lose her scholie?

Say hello to Cameron Brink, everyone!

Totally understandable given the pandemic and her past injury situation. I assume she is graduating and would be done with basketball at Stanford, unless she came back as a grad student. Or grad transferred after this season, if there is a season.
A shame for her and us that we never got to see what she could do. She was never healthy long enough to really get going. Her Stanford career wasn't what it could have been through no fault of hers.

Was hoping to see her play but understandable. Her defense would have been significant help.
I think it makes us very vulnerable at the post

The post position all of the sudden has become very interesting. We will be without stalwarts Fingall and Dodson who often anchored our defensive end last season. On the positive side, this gives our young posts much more time to grow up against elite competition. Belibi, Prechtel, and Brink should all see increased minutes with Jerome providing the senior leadership for the team. If any of them get snake bitten by an injury, the rotation becomes that much thinner. We are very suddenly a very guard heavy team with the Hulls, Kiana, Jana, Jenna, Anna, Haley, Agnes, and Hannah all competing for minutes at the three guard positions.
It’s not inconceivable that we might see some rotations with four guards on the floor with a Hull potentially rotated into the 4 slot, I imagine.
RE: WBB: Dodson - Softball Fan - 09-21-2020
I'm a casual observer of the sport. I always thought Prechtel was a stud with good potential.

I’m sure that anyone who opts out keeps their scholarship.
I think we are still loaded at the post. No question on offense and while good points made on defense the young uns really haven’t had a chance to play a lot of post D. they are young. But very athletic.

I don't like Stanford losing any athletes - want them all to be content with their decision to play for and attend Stanford. I also think it helpful to have a roster of players with varying strengths/attributes, including toughness. Dodson brought this. I also thought Carrington was very tough (along with being a great overall player).
The absence of any mention of the coaching staff in her statement - especially when contrasted with the comments about teammates - gives me pause. Maybe Dodson's departure has absolutely zero to do with the staff . . . but I still think Carrington got sideways with Tara & Co. and if Dodson did, too . . . well . . . pause.
I admit this is all speculation from a STH. But, there it is.

Sad to see Dodson go. However, she just never seemed comfortable on the offensive end. And when we struggled last year it was because we didn't have enough scorers on the floor. This means more playing time for Prechtel, Belibi and Brink. Prechtel is already a scorer. Belibi has the potential to score a lot more on drives to the basket and hopefully we will see Brink's scoring abilities as well.

The thought has crossed my mind too. Carrington's farewell statement was much the same, praising the sisterhood but not a word about the coaches.
I enjoyed watching Dodson play, and will miss her. I feel badly that injuries and COVID prevented her from becoming the star I always hoped and expected she could be. My instinct tells me she will save a final year of eligibility for a full season--not a truncated one--since it must have hurt very much to come back from injury last year and get only a few games in before COVID quashed the season. Maybe she will follow Carrington. It makes me sad.

Honestly, I think there may be undue speculation into the situation with the coaches here. Dodson may well be planning to return in a year. As such, it’s possible that she didn’t feel the need to thank the coaches or say goodbye to Stanford. This doesn’t read as a goodbye to Stanford, just as a pause for a year.

Reading a bit on Dodson more on mom I think this has more to do with the state of our country. Dodson has a voice and will use it. It’s not always about basketball
That said I’ll miss her
RE: WBB: Dodson -
M T - 09-21-2020
Separately from any possible issue with the coaches, I think a decision to forgo this season can't be questioned. There are so many things that could be going on in her life apart from basketball. I wish her well.
That said, unless "Stanford family" is a code word for coaches, I think the coaching staff is conspicuously missing. She had to discuss it with the coaches. She says she will support "them" (the teammates), rather than the team. She says she will miss the atmosphere that the teammates create.
There are 3 possibilities that I can believe:
1) She had issues with the coaches or they with her.
2) She was asked to leave the team, or there was a mutual agreement to that effect.
3) Her reasons for leaving have nothing to do with the team (injury, grades, romance, family issues, ...)
While she didn't close the door on playing in college in the future, she didn't mention it, but then she didn't mention life after graduation in any fashion.

Bob, just out of curiosity, when is the last time you've been critical of a sitting Stanford coach? I love Tara's teams and what she has brought to the women's basketball program; however, it's perfectly fair game to wonder if she is running players off for whatever reason(s). And I conceded this was speculation (I just happen to think it based on reasonable tea leave reading).

Hanson softball for three years
Dawkins for not making the NCAA
Haase. Love his recruiting but still zero NCAAs
Harris and Buddy ok long ago
Mark here and there
I’m not good at posting on a board about people and coaches I‘ve had one on one conversations with them talk behind their back.
Too many take pot shots at those in charge. That’s so easy and yes I go on one in particular but that’s political
I looked for you T at several WBB Games to give you my thoughts on Cartington but couldn’t find you so some day
I enjoy Stanford sports. Plus I’m an upbeat guy :)

I get that you're "close to the program/coaches" while I am just a STH and fan. BTW, my seats are in end zone near the women's team bench. That's where I am for almost all home games, if you ever want to chat. But i don't consider this speculation anything out of the ordinary, especially for a fan; nor do I consider it any slight to Tara or the coaches. It's a fair topic to wonder about, and I'd love to hear any staff comments on the departure of Dodson. For various reasons, I don't expect to hear that (and that's fine).
Have the women started formal hoops practices yet? The reason I ask is that is seems a tad odd to "opt out" of a "potential season?" I mean, it's possible there will be nothing left to opt out of . . . so I'm thinking practices must have started (or will very soon).
