K.J. and the Pirate - JohnR34231 - 09-26-2020

The movie begins today.

Can't wait for the inevitable comparisons between his performance under Leach versus his performance under Shaw.

It's gonna expose Shaw.

Here's a recent article on KJ and Leach.  Also has a nice Stanford highlight video.

How?  KJ progressed well.  Had a terrific Soph year. Then he got hurt.  Completely different offenses. Stanford would never win playing Leachs style. They win when they can run and stop the run. They have done neither the last couple years. KJ left because Mills, if healthy, is better.

Prior to Minshew how many Leach QBs took a snap in an NFL game? Not a very good track record: https://www.footballperspective.com/is-gardner-minshew-already-the-best-mike-leach-quarterback-in-the-nfl/

How many elite QB recruits has Leach had?

How many elite QBs aspire to go to WSA

+1. JJAW, Kaden Smith, and Trent Irwin - all of whom regularly won contested catches - made KJ look very very good in 2018.

Pritchard's offense uses more RPO out of the shotgun, and is less "traditional drop back" pro-style which Bloomgren as OC wanted KJ for. Leach's system is predicated on a quick release and KJ's is LOOOOONG. But one thing KJ loves to do is sling the crap outta the rock. Should be fun. We'll see what happens.

Also notable: LSU's mega-freak stud CB Derek Stingley is OUT for this game.

"How he fares against the speed and athleticism on SEC defenses will reveal a lot more than Costello’s previous three years against Pac-12 competition."

Not sure how Stanford comes out looking good on this one. If he does great it seems the Pirate gets the credit. If he does poorly it will be a reflection on Stanford and Shaw.

This was written by an LSU beat writer (whose SEC bias couldn't be more blatant...good god, for real?).

If KJ does poorly, it will be a reflection on KJ not being the stud people thought he was. Or how unfit he is for Leach's quick-release system. I fail to see how that reflects on Stanford and Shaw when we're going with a better QB causing KJ to leave.

Maybe you're right. Maybe it will be the second time three years that a formerly starting QB under Shaw transferred to an SEC team and underperformed? Who knows? We will find out soon.

Chryst was raised by NFL coach and his Uncle is a great college HC. Yet he came to Stanford with poor fundamentals. He was a man amongst boys in HS. Heck he was bigger than most d-lineman. But he got by on that. Mechanics sucked. Another poor throwing motion. Not accurate. It’s pretty hard to change a throwing motion in College. Muscle memory etc. Never thought he’d do anything at Tenn. He didn’t underperform. He was as he was. Not good enough to see the field much. And Tenn was a lower tier SEC team.

As for KJ, I’m rooting for him. Question I have is if he will stay healthy. I know nothing about MSU o-line. Or anything else about MSU for that matter. But I expect the upper tier SEC defenses to hit Leachs QBs as much as possible.

As for SEC bias....  Seriously, is there anyone out there that thinks the SEC is not vastly superior to PAC-12.  Not to mention every other conference.  Look at the NFL draft year in year out. The talent difference is gigantic.

Edit: 2019. 339 from SEC. 253 Big 10. 189 PAC-12. As I said, major talent gap.

Not that it matters much of late, especially compared to Larry's Pac-12, but the SEC does have 14 teams, versus 12 for the Big10 and Pac. Would take the 339 down to 290. Still a brobdingnagian advantage now, was less a few years back.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - Austroturf - 09-26-2020

Costello looked good on his second drive.  I am no big fan of Leach, but I certainly hope Costello has a good final year at the Bulldogs.  He did a lot for Stanford football, and I wish him well.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - JJJ - 09-26-2020

Stanford being mentioned a number of times already and so far not in a bad way. I didn’t expect to be interested in watching this, but if I watched Korean baseball, I guess this’ll do.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - OutsiderFan - 09-26-2020

Nothing defines the difference between Mike Leach and David Shaw than the fact Costello is not wearing a brace on his left knee.

Costello looks much less statue-like and more fluid without it.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - PVTree - 09-26-2020

I'm rooting for Costello and have enjoyed his performance so far. I'll let the criticism chips fall where they fall. I'm just enjoying having college football on tv.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - Austroturf - 09-26-2020

The MSU center is making Costello's life difficult.  High snaps and an early snap.  That won't do it.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - BobK - 09-26-2020

Harbaugh started the brace on the left leg. Blame him.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - BostonCard - 09-26-2020

And Costello throws his first SEC touchdown, unfortunately to an LSU DB.

RE: K.J. and the Pirate - Austroturf - 09-26-2020

Seems the LSU defense has now figured out how to squelch the air-raid.  The MSU center, Cole Smith, continues to botch his snaps, forcing Costello to rush his passes.  Now a pick-six deep in Bulldog territory.  The Tiger offense has been inept so far; but their defense may have made the adjustments necessary to ensure Leach and Costello have a long afternoon.
