I don't know how you can watch him talking about Leach's coaching style and not take that as a bunch of digs at Shaw.

KJ is a competitor and appreciates the aggressiveness of Leach's offensive philosophy of always attacking. In addition, he also has pointed out  the work ethic of his new teammates. You can take those as digs against Shaw, but I don't read too much into that. He is complementing Coach Leach's system and enjoying playing in the most QB friendly system in the country. The comments about the players working harder and being more aggressive are more worrisome to me.  Is our program filled with a lot of players who just care less about football and aren't putting as much into it? I hesitate to raise the question as I know the Stanford players are grinding and working hard, but elsewhere are the players working even harder because it means more?

I found the AJ Tarpley interview on Troy Clardy's podcast to be interesting.  The 2010 team had lots of talented players but not necessarily as highly touted recruiting wise as our recent teams.  Tarpley didn't come to Stanford because he was a "Stanford man". He came because it was his best offer. He had his eyes on the Big Ten.  He played with a chip on his shoulder and rode that all the way to the NFL.  I am not sure we are getting guys like that any longer and are instead getting players who buy into the "Stanford man" Shaw philosophy and football may not be as important to them.

Murphy, Gardner, Lancaster, AJ, Skov, yadda, yadda. Maybe have a couple like them but not many.

Sure, it's an indictment on Shaw, but it's an indictment on most football coaches.  Many coaches, Shaw included, act like on 3rd and 6, especially late in the game, you absolutely must run your route to 6 yards. This mentality can constrict your ability to play loose and makes your offense easier to defend.

There are times I question Leach decisions, but all-in-all, I will take the bad with the good because his teams are entertaining. Ever since his Texas Tech team beat Cal in the 2004 Holiday Bowl against Aaron Rodgers, I appreciated his approach.  If he ever had a good defense, he would be really difficult to beat. He has a good DC in Alex Grinch, but not the best athletes, particularly the jumbo ones, to really be a Top 10 team.  He might have those athletes now.  I'm just glad he didn't get hired by USC. That would have been terrifying.

Grinch is currently at Oklahoma.

"I don't know how you can watch him talking about Leach's coaching style and not take that as a bunch of digs at Shaw."

I tend to agree, especially since KJ couldn't hide his frustration on the field when Shaw would shut down drives and run up the middle or kick. I'll admit, I may have projected my own frustrations, but to my eyes KJ was the most visibly frustrated of any Stanford player in these situations.

Yeah, I don't read too much into it as a dig against Shaw.  Everyone knows what Shaw is about.

It's a dig at everyone who doesn't just sling the ball around and play like it's 3rd down every play.  That's pretty much everyone.

I think someone already posted -- going to be interesting to see how Leach does when the league itself (SEC) has it's own internal recruiting draw and he can get some really high level players.

Yes. It’s a simple equation. Guys who are 100percent football put more into it. By definition the Stanford model doesn’t demand that all the guys to be 100percent football.

This has always been the issue at Stanford. Our best teams have had maybe 75 percent of guys who are 100 percent all in. The other 25 percent skip practice or go light on weights so they can attend lab or lecture.

Those 25 percent? They are your hungry scout team players in other models. THAT’s why KJ is saying MSU goes harder in practice.  The only way Stanford ever got that in practice was to go ones vs ones, and that isn’t good for your starters’ health Or your young guys’ development.

Oh, and it used to be that “full contact” practices that were carried out softly or with people not going all out actually increased injuries. Nowadays who knows, since practices are pretty soft all the time now.
