Giolito has now pitched 5 perfect innings

One of the White Sox pitchers is Evan Marshall. Sunnyvale Southern Little League and Homestead HS

RE: Flemming and Mendoza on ESPN - chrisk - 09-29-2020

White Sox have not won a playoff round since 2005. The A’s last won a playoff round in 2006.

After Giolito gives up first hit in 7th, Marshall starts warming up.

The A's are in post season form. Have just one hit and are down 3-0 at home as the higher seed, through 7 innings.

After the A’s get first 2 on in 8th, Marshall comes in to relieve Giolito.

Mendoza is very knowledgeable but she talks too much. Maybe, it's because there are only two of them, and she's not talked over by the two guys she's normally with.

I had similar thoughts today.

ESPN definitely has a no silence policy.   This is more critical now since there really isn't any fan noise to add to the broadcast.   Given COVID19's reality someone has to be saying something to avoid the ultimate sin of on-air silence.

However with 3 people she usually has the task of breaking up the typical announcer stories that often take crazy tangents.   She gets to bring it back to baseball (or softball) with a quick insight on tactics, a player vulnerability, etc.   With only 2 she has almost too much time to dive deep into player insights and does not seem to have a library of down time stories.

It is a tough balance.   Mendoza is a bit too focused on the deep dive into the sport psychology.     Walton (in basketball) is often too focused on the tangents.  Given those options I will take Mendoza and baseball over Walton and the Grateful Dead every time.

A former colleague (and A's fan) said that Flemming's broadcast today barely hid his contempt for the A's.  [I assume the theory is that because Flemming is a Giants' broadcaster, he necessarily must not like the Athletics].

I find any of that that hard to believe, as Flemming is a pro's pro in the broadcasting world.

Just curious if any other A's fan watched the ESPN broadcast today and felt that Flemming was revealing an anti-A's bias?

You obviously never saw the Dead with Jerry....  :) Walton is absurd.  But funny at times.

Fans are used to listening to their guys.  So they find bias when they listen to a national game.  Heck, I do that with F-ing Joe Buck when he calls a Giants game against the Cardinals.  Course he is biased..... :)

ESPN had a significant audio problem.  Fleming is in North Carolina and Mendoza is in Oregon.  Their communication was impeded by a syncing issue (there was a delay between them of several seconds).  In an interview, Fleming said it was very problematic because they could not speak without thinking the other party might say something at the same time.

Note :  Why is Fleming in N.C.?  Because ESPN only has two studios that could be used - Connecticut and N.C. (they have a rule the PBP person must be in one of their studios).
