TreeCast w/Evan Moore, Shaw, Pritchard & Anderson -
troyc - 10-07-2020
It's another buffet-sized TreeCast! You'll come away from this episode stuffed with the latest from Stanford Football.
+ plenty of coachspeak, as you'll hear Lance Anderson's thorough breakdown of the DBs and Tavita Pritchard's thoughts on playing in empty stadiums in Eugene, Seattle, and Berkeley. Plus, David Shaw gives the most Stanford answer of all time...
+ special guest Evan Moore (former Stanford WR, current analyst w/FOX Sports, Pac-12 Network, and SiriusXM) breaks down Stanford's WR room and tells which teams to watch in the Pac-12 (you'll be surprised by his surprise team!)
+ knee-jerk reactions to Stanford Football Schedule 3.0

The TreeCast with Troy Clardy: Coachspeak And Moore (October 7, 2020)

Wow a full hour-long TreeCast! Great content Troy some thoughts:
- What the Hell is taking Santa Clara County so long to approve Stanford's plans for practice? The state gave them the necessary waivers over a week ago. This is now putting Stanford at a competitive disadvantage.
- Spot on that Stanford MUST go 3-0 at home. That road schedule is BRUTAL
- I'd rather be getting Oregon on the road in November than December
- I'd rather be getting Washington on the road in November than December
- I'd rather be getting Big Game in December than November. Cal has a long tendency to fade in the second half of the season
- Big Game on the Friday after Thanksgiving would be crappy in any other year, but without fans in the stadium I'm ambivalent
- There may be depth on defense but there's not a lot of talent other than ILB & DE
- Lance Anderson put a LOT of spin on his very weak defense backfield
- Malik Antoine may be able to coach, but they need a safety who can TACKLE
- I'm optimistic about Kelly & McGill, but the other three positions are brobdingnagian question marks
I feel like we're at the same point we've been the last few years, with a LOT of holes to fill with unproven players - either inexperienced or underperforming. When the holes have been this many and this deep, Shaw hasn't shown the ability to develop enough talent to plug enough of them with quality players to be better than just above .500 in conference.

Stanford's solution is to go to San Mateo county to practice. Which if you think about it is ridiculously dumb. The virus doesn't care where the practice was held, so there is no difference in risk between holding practice in Santa Clara county versus holding it in San Mateo county.

- given a new QB, no Autzen crowd, and (presumably) better weather, I agree
- agree here, too. Again, with no home crowds, I think the biggest home-field advantage factor becomes weather
- it could be argued that there is no second half to this season. Cal's schedule isn't easy, btw (crossover is ASU, plane ride to Pullman in mid-Dec)
- Stanford gets a break here. Could you imagine if this game had
that crowd in Berkeley this year?
Crowd or no crowd, Stanford's road schedule is daunting (UO, UW, Cal should be good this year). But the fact that those games will be played without fans makes a difference. Enough of a difference for the Card to take advantage? We'll see.
Thank you for listening!

One thing I hadn’t appreciated until the last few days is that Washington, Oregon and Washington State will all be breaking in new QBs. This is a relief as our secondary isn’t exactly a proven bunch. OTOH, we have an experienced QB with a high ceiling and a lot of depth and experience at WR. I am also quite bullish about our OLB group.

The fact that two new quarterbacks (freshmen, no less) passed us silly in games 2 and 3 last year makes me get less excited about facing new QB's And of course Wazzu had new QB's the last two years and we didn't fare too well against them either.
I do agree that if Mills can stay healthy we should have an excellent passing attack.

Finally got done listening to Evan Moore's section. Man, is he good. I really enjoyed it and came away with lots of new information as well. Kudos to you both.

Others have more name recognition, but he's one of the best in the biz. Always learn something new whenever I talk to him. Glad you enjoyed it too!
