from the Spokane newspaper
Quote:A former four-star cornerback who planned to join Stanford’s football team before the school sought out information about his involvement in an eight-month-long police investigation is now at Washington State as a walk-on, a source close to the program confirmed to the The Spokesman-Review.
Cougfan.com first reported the news that Ayden Hector, a standout player at Seattle powerhouse Eastside Catholic, had landed with the Cougars nearly six months after Stanford withdrew the player’s scholarship.

Well, this is a bit of a rehash, but for those who don't recall...
According to police a 16 year-old girl was assaulted by four Eastside Catholic High football players (Hayden was present but did not participate). No charges were filed by the King County prosecutor.
If the above--gleaned from the Spokesman-Review--is accurate, there's plenty of bad optics to go around.
As far as optics for Stanford or WSU, I don't know. Stanford pulled Hector's scholarship, WSU isn't giving him one, at least not yet.
Let me put it this way: If Hector had been a non-athlete admit to Stanford, would they have revoked his admissions? If not, would he have been allowed to walk-on to Stanford's football team?
I don't even pretend to know what the right answer is because I don't know the facts. So we're left with optics instead.

If Hayden had been a regular student, I'm not sure that the Palo Alto Daily would have submitted a FOIA request to get the sealed court records, so Stanford may never have known he was involved. But I think that if Stanford did find out a normal student had been involved in an action like this, his (or her) admission would have been revoked, athlete or not.
But a lot of speculation on my part.

I forgot -- did the Stanford coaching staff know about this prior to the public revelations? Or did Hector not mention the police investigation from the coaching staff?

I don't think that has been disclosed.

Glad to see the kid is getting a second chance.
Just hope he doesn't make a big play to beat us one of these years.
