Stanford vs. California recruiting battles - OutsiderFan - 10-13-2011

It seems there are several recruits considering both California and Stanford this recruiting cycle.

From what I can gather, California and Stanford are both high on the list of the following players:

DL Aziz Shittu
OLB Ifeadi Odenigbo
OL Joshua Garnett
OL Matt Cochran
OL Freddie Tagaloa

In most cases guys admitted to Stanford will sign there.  And I don't know of too many guys that were admitted to Stanford and chose UC instead.  So it seems to me that if accepted they all would go to Stanford, but that is pure speculation on my part.  A guy like Shittu for example may really want to play for California DL coach Tosh Lupoi even if admitted to Stanford.

What do you guys think?  Are all these guys Stanford-bound if admitted, or might some of them chose California, even if admitted?  Is there a time frame or defined window for admissions decisions?  I would think with signing day the first Wed. in February that all admissions decisions would have to be done in January, if not December.

On those guys - Redrum - 10-13-2011

Cochran....his heart lies in Alabama if they'd offer.  Stanford recruitniks think the trail to Palo Alto is growing cold.  Whether that means he'd end up in Berkeley is anybody's guess.  This anybody thinks not.

Odenigbo...Yeah.  That's the guy Stanford really, really, really wants.  Supposedly interested in comp sci,  so UC could make a credible pitch.  I think Cal is well into this one, particularly w/ Lupoi as lead.

Garnett...  Issued a kind of policy statement early on that he's pretty much done with the West Coast,  interested in schools in the Midwest.  OTOH,  he visited us and maybe,  having seen the wide world of the Midwest,  he'll be less interested.  Nobody getting good, reliable reading on Garnett ...yet.  Not in a hurry to decide.

Tagaloa...Kal fans seem higher on him than some Stanford recruitniks.  Raw physical potential but like a lot of big HS players, getting by just being big.  We might have cooled on him or him on us.  Taking the 3-star Caspers this week may be a hint.

Shittu...Given his academic profile and Lupoi,  I like Kal's chances better than ours,  but the wildcard w/ Shittu is he seems to say almost anything when the recruiting services when asked his leaders/schools of interest.  Makes it almost impossible to tell what he's actually thinking concerning his favorites.

Of course, this being gleaned from the recruitnik/fan base sources,  God only knows what's really going on.

Lost a couple last class, IIRC. Did Brendan Scarlett clear admissions? I imagine since he committed in December and we were his other finalist he was in a comfortable position...

Add on Cochran - Redrum - 10-13-2011

IIRC, I think Stanford is recruiting him as a NT first,  OL second.  Don't know how that plays with him vs. other schools.

Cal's D-Line is insanely deep. No way Shittu chooses Cal if admitted to Stanford - Stanford is a brobdingnagian long shot though because of admissions. Pretty sure Odenigbo is a silent commit and is just waiting to be admitted - I think Cal is his back-up plan. Also I think the confusion around Garnett was he wasn't doing any officials on the west coast but was still considering some schools like UW and Stanford. Cochran is probably a long shot to get admitted and I have a feeling he ends up at Auburn. And considering there's been no chatter about Tagaloa and Stanford in months I'm guessing Stanford cooled off after seeing his SAT score. They're currently focused on Kyle Murphy, Andrus Peat, Andrew Jelks, Nick Davidson, Colby Cyburt, and the latest being Jordan Williams (same town as Conner Crane and Cole Underwood but different HS). I also think Caspers was offered due to Brandon Fanaika being a long shot and Josh Garnett being no sure thing.

Re: Stanford vs. California recruiting battles - Treebound - 10-13-2011

Had heard that Shittu was retaking the SAT.  That's a good sign for us that he extended the effort on the retake.  I haven't heard if that went well for him?  I've also heard that the head coach there (or perhaps someone on staff) is a UCB guy and has been trying to push both Cochran and Shittu to cal.    I think both are admissions questions for Stanford so I wish them luck in the process.

Holding good thoughts on Odenigbo and Garnett.  I would love to get the Nigerian Stanford connections rolling again (in Odenigbo's case)!

Results from the SAT Shittu took will be available to students and schools next week. He tweeted that he didn't feel he did well on them. I hear there's also an ACT coming up.

Re: Stanford vs. California recruiting battles - jacketree - 10-13-2011

I was wondering when the 10/01 SAT results would be out. The next ACT is next Saturday.  There may be one more date for each test this calendar year that can be considered for 2012 admission, but I promised my kid he's done no matter what.

Latest story on Cochran mentions his leading 2 are now Cal and Auburn.

Go Auburn! - Redrum - 10-13-2011

Having a crappy season coming of the NC season.  But I'd rather see Cochran in the SEC than at our Northwest Bay Rivals.  (There, Jacketree! Happy now?)

Re: Stanford vs. California recruiting battles - washingtonismoney - 10-13-2011

Does it matter? If Cochran goes to the 59ers, he'll stumble out four to five years later having finished with a record of 28-20 or so. If he becomes a good, highly-drafted player, he will be dogged by the question of why he (and his fellow highly-recruited teammates) was unable to deliver unto the 59ers the Rose Bowl. If, in all probability, he doesn't become such a player, he will be simply mediocre.

At any rate, I'm getting pretty tired of those southerners. I'm prepared to support most efforts to undermine their continued success.
