1993 Stanford vs. Colorado -
cctop - 10-24-2020
While cleaning my garage I found an old VHS tape of the 1993 Stanford v. Colorado game, so I uploaded it to Youtube.
Spoiler alert: Stanford won 41-37 on a controversial last-second catch by Tony Cline.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMJn8JyHPyo
Check out 02:22 for a photo of a very young David Shaw. (If anyone can tell me how to insert a Youtube link without automatically embedding the video like above, please let me know and I'll link directly to that moment.)
The pass from Stenstrom to Cline is at 03:08:46.
I remember thinking at the time that I wouldn't have ruled it a catch, and certainly by today's standards it would have been incomplete since Cline didn't establish control.
But also, by today's standards the defender would have been called for targeting and Stanford would have had 1st and goal at the 2 1/2 with eight seconds left on the clock, enough time for two more pass plays.
In theory Stanford could have kicked a field goal, but remember this was 3 years before the OT rules were put in place, so the game would have ended in a tie.
Here's the Stanford Daily recap of the game if you're curious.

Wow, thanks for uploading.
*That's* what David Shaw looked like in his playing days?? You mean he didn't always resemble Christopher Judge?
Also, Glyn "I'm-gonna-pick-my-own-gap-and-still-find-daylight" Milburn must have been so fun to watch in person...
And the game hasn't even started! I miss the Old Lady.

Best College Football game experience I have ever had in my life.
Great game. Great players playing, particularly on the Colorado side. Went with three of my best friends from high school. Will never forget it.

I do, and I don't. I very much appreciate the amenities, the seats with actual legroom, the broad walkways of the existing stadium. But I liked crowds of 80,000+...

This is a real gem, cctop. Thanks for the effort to transfer and upload it. The women's basketball team makes a cameo appearance as well at about 2:41:52 in a flashback segment showing the last 8 seconds of Stanford's 96-95 OT win over #1 ranked Tennessee in December, 1991 (a season which would end with Stanford's most recent national championship).

One of the most exciting games I've ever attended. It felt like one of the great shootouts from the John (not Jack!) Elway years. As someone noted, Colorado had some great athletes but our guys got 'er done that night.

Yeah, wasn't short passes and hitting receivers in stride part of Bill Walsh's philosophy?
Also, when's the last time we saw Stanford run a hook-and-lateral? It's at 02:54:15. The lateral is Justin Armour to David Shaw. :-)

I don't think I would've been able to pick out that David Shaw in a line-up...
Interesting how times have changed because these guys were talking right through the national anthem.
Very curious how you uploaded a VHS tape onto youtube--did it involve playing it back on a smart tv?

Does Cline remember that touchdown? A nasty hit.

My computer has a TV tuner card so I just plugged the VCR straight into my PC and uploaded the resulting video.
If you don't have a TV tuner or video capture card, nowadays you can buy one that plugs into a USB port. Just search for "VHS converter". Some are as cheap as $10, but caveat emptor.

Thanks! Going to check it out (assuming my VCR player still plays). :)

One thing I have carried from this 1993 game has been cynicism about the coaches' poll.
This game ended late - after 11 PM local time, as I remember getting home (I live in the East Bay) around 1 AM.
This was a game of great relevance, as Colorado had an excellent record from 1992, and was actually considered a contender for a national championship in 1993. Hence, this was a big win for Stanford. I was eagerly awaiting the new rankings, which came out Sunday evening. I was stunned when Stanford actually
dropped in the standings, whereas Colorado stayed the same. This meant one thing - that the voters (nominally the head coaches, but in reality the task is given to their assistants) didn't even bother to check the results of the game before submitting their ballots.

I was there; it was my co-term year. Chills.
Stenstrom. Still, I think, the most under-rated Stanford quarterback. Love that guy. Not the best athlete to ever play for us at that position, but good enough. He was brilliant, a good arm, and, above all, a gamer. Over the years, he took so many hits, and Just. Kept. Slinging.
My friends used to get sick of me saying, "Just get it to Milburn in the flat." Glyn was just amazing. A wizard. Took my breath away, some of his moves.

My first-ever Stanford Football game. Cool to see this again.
A few things have changed since then, no?

So just out of curiosity, let's do a roll call of who was at this game.
Copy and paste this list into a new post and add your name to it if it isn't on it yet. Starting with everyone in this thread who said they were there. Some who replied to the thread may have been there but didn't specifically mention it.

First Stanford game I ever watched, from my grandparents house in LA, on my way up from San Diego to Stanford to enroll as a freshman. Sadly, that was the high point of the year, and Stanford had a losing record.

Teejers (TJ Martin) present and accounted for - entertaining game (but not as good as the Ws at ND in '90 and '92).
And I agree 100% with the love for Strenstrom's toughness. The only QB who took a worse beating at Stanford was the 5 star kid from Los Gatos during the Dark Times. Stanford was lucky the parents didn't sue the university for child endangerment. That was just brutal. But Stenny, with better coaching and some more weapons, would manage to produce even while taking a beating. Pretty sure Stenny played against the Desert Swarm defense of the Arizona Wildcats (but I could be mistaken on that). And talk about ugly . . . the worst Stanford offensive performance I ever witness came against Arizona at the Old Lady. It was a pathetic showing by the Cardinal; and sheer dominance by the Wildcats D.
