Bully for them.
that's what hard work and dedication can do for a kid.

And failing to use your full allotment of scholarships on HS prospects.

This was not a case where we failed to use our full allotment of scholarships on HS prospects.  For the first time in a while, we were at a point where we had to encourage some non-contributors to graduate transfer to make way for our new signees.  We were close to a full allotment of scholarships, but Little and Adebo both declared for the NFL.

And Head opted out/left. I believe we were at 79 before these two.

Ideally those last couple spots are when you're at 83 scholarships, not 79.

The point is that this was not due to signing too few freshmen, but because too many upperclassmen opted not to return (especially after signing day).

Congrats to both! I was actually surprised that Keck did not get a scholie before this year. Am not surprised that Jorgensen got one; I wonder if he is the first Stanford walk-on freshman ever to not redshirt...

Speaking of freshman walk-ons, did anyone read about that freshman walk-on safety at Wake Forest?

Ryan Whalen played all 12 games as a walk on Frosh. Caught just one pass

RE: Congrats to Thunder Keck and Spencer Jorgensen - SamuelMcF - 10-25-2020

I was gonna mention Ryan Sanborn and Brock Jones last year, but didn't they both technically receive scholarships as soon as they saw the field?

Yes. My understanding is that both of them were always going to get scholarships once they suited up. My guess is that they withheld Jones's scholarship as insurance against him going into the baseball draft. Not sure why they made Sanborn's a condition of his actual matriculation.

RE: Congrats to Thunder Keck and Spencer Jorgensen - BobK - 10-26-2020

Why would Sanborn get a scholarship once he got on the field
Jones wasn’t eligible for the draft

I thought preferred walk-ons became counters against the scholarship limit once they see the field, but I can't find a reference in google.  But if that is correct, then there would be no point to not giving them a scholarship once they count against the limit.

I don't think that is the rule with PWOs as I've understood the rule.  PWO helps more with OU/Montag.  it is the rule for baseball signees once they play in a college football game.

RE: Congrats to Thunder Keck and Spencer Jorgensen - BobK - 10-26-2020

Agree with Boston as we have other preferred walkons not on scholarship

Having a partial in one sport would make you a scholarship athlete in a full scholarship sport

RE: Congrats to Thunder Keck and Spencer Jorgensen - Langdude - 10-26-2020

PWO are not scholarships. They are merely walk-ons that have been guaranteed spots on the team during their senior year of high school. Two of them last year, Sanborn and Jones, were also promised scholarships once the season began, though I am not sure exactly why they were not given scholarships before arriving at Stanford.

Jones was eligible for the baseball draft out of high school in 2019.

RE: Congrats to Thunder Keck and Spencer Jorgensen - BobK - 10-26-2020

Yes on Jones out of HS of course. But nothing to do with his football scholarship

In Sanborn's case, once he beat out fellow PWO Alex Gracey to become the starting P, that's when he earned the scholarship. I don't think he was promised one, per se.

And like slide said, Jones counted against the football team's scholarships once he hit the field. Were he just a scout team player he'd have remained a FB walk-on on a baseball scholarship.

RE: Congrats to Thunder Keck and Spencer Jorgensen - BobK - 10-26-2020

Thanks Sam. Of course that’s a partial scholie for baseball. 30-40% of a full

RE: Congrats to Thunder Keck and Spencer Jorgensen - Phogge - 10-26-2020

Oh the minutiae of football. On TOS they interviewed the coordinators. They said the standard things including praising some relatively unknown guys. Every year we hear that about some kids but then the kid never delivers.
