Wisconsin-Nebraska football game canceled - Papa John - 10-28-2020

Apologies if this has already been posted elsewhere. The cancellation is due to a Covid-19 outbreak amongst 12 people in the Wisconsin program, including coach Paul Chryst, who is Keller's uncle. The game will not be rescheduled and, even though Wisconsin's outbreak does not meet the B1G threshold for a required cancellation, it will be recorded as a no-contest as opposed to a Wisconsin forfeit. You can read more about it here.

Unsurprisingly, Nebraska fans are calling for the team to find a replacement non-conference foe who is willing to play in Lincoln this Saturday.

Still think that 21 day rule will get revisited.  Can you imagine that for a Pac player/team (and it WILL happen) - that's half the "season."

BigTen has to say no to the latest Nebraska move.

Highly unlikely that the opponent would have been complying with the BigTen testing policies.
Also possible that the opponent could bring COVID19 to the Nebraska football team which is exactly what the BigTen wanted to avoid.
And realistically, what team has an open date AND would be willing to go to Lincoln with less than 48 hours of prep.

And what does it accomplish anyway.  They aren't going to the CFP and given their brand and fans they will go to a bowl game.

Correct.  Right down the line.

You guys clearly don't understand Nebraska football. Not saying you're wrong. Just saying that you don't understand Nebraska football. Maybe this will help:

In 2019, the Nebraska spring game attendance was 85,946.

And the team I saw mentioned on a Big Red fan board was Western Kentucky, which plays BYU on Saturday so nevermind.

Pac 12 doesn't have a 21 day rule

Perfect reason why a game should not be played right when social distancing is critical to stemming the third wave lol.

Key word there: "fans"

Not the school. Not the AD. Not the HC.

They're not having a game in two days. Hey Husker fans - deal with it

The comment about fans are real.  I thought about adding in an idea with my first comment.  But will add it here.

Yes, Nebraska is well known for its ability to pack fans in the stands for scrimmages.
First, the BigTen has rather strict rules on fans at games in the BigTen this year.   Can't imagine the BigTen would want every team to comply for all of their massive rivalry games, but let Nebraska pack the house for Regional State U with an open date.  The logistics of selling tickets always looks seamless, but it takes more than 48 hours to get that done properly.

Next, Nebraska probably could just pack the house with a scrimmage, if that crowd hype is really key to rallying the athletes.   Has a bit of a youth sports vibe to scrimmage after an opponent cancels, but Scott Frost's team needs the practice.

In the end, Nebraska wanted this 2020 BigTen season and they likely will not be the only ones to experience a COVID cancellation.   Sorry Purdue, I think you'll be next.

Of course they wanted a game, any game. Have any of you guys been sentenced to a few days in Lincoln? I have.

Spot-on. Especially the attendance figure for their spring game last year. I've known a Husker for many years. He tells me that Stanford football wouldn't measure up to some high-school programs in his home state (let alone the Friday-Night-Lights culture in Texas) in terms of following, attention and fanaticism. Didn't someone, somewhere, once say "We are not Nebraska"?   :-)

Scott Frost on his way out, no doubt.

Yes Leland was right Gail. In the long run

RE: Wisconsin-Nebraska football game canceled - Papa John - 10-29-2020

Well, Herbie Husker tried to schedule FCS Chattanooga for this Saturday, but the Big Ten Conference said no.

We witnessed the Big Red devotion just two years ago when the Stanford Women's Volleyball team took them on for the NC at Minnesota December 2018.  Their fans made the 5 1/2 hr drive at the last minute to pack the arena.
This is not meant to be a defense of our former AD (I'll never forgive him for giving us his buddy).  But we have the competition with Giants, A's, Niners, Warriors, Sharks, and formerly Raiders, as well as two other FBS football teams, all within a 40 min drive.  The Cornhuskers compete within their entire state against ... nada.  Ted was correct about this -  we will never be Nebraska.

IIRC, wasn't Ted's "we are not Nebraska" comment in context of head coaching salaries?  In other words, he used that as a rationale for back-to-back bad hires (the FOT) hires.  I would argue, that on the point for which Ted raised the comment, we are - in fact - Nebraska.

Here's what I recall.  Ted made three quotes during that time that I won't forget, in the few years after Tyrone left.

The first was, "We will not get in an arms race."  This was when other factories were building ever-impressive facilities. See Oregon, USC, Alabama.  I did understand this.  Stanford could certainly afford to, but would not, devote resources that would exclude non-athlete students.

The second was, "We will pay a good salary, but we will not pay market rates."  I think this is the statement in the context of head coaching salaries.  Ted wanted to stem the tide of record breaking HC contracts.  This probably played a role in the BT hire.  Rather than pay a well known HC, he wanted an up and coming assistant (or so he hoped) that would require less.  At that time, paying a HC more than what the President of the University made would have been anathema to the faculty senate.

The third comment, "We are not Nebraska", was referencing Nebraska's HC at the time, Frank Solich.  in 2003, they started out 5-0. but lost three key games and ended the regular season 9-3.  And Nebraska fired him!  Ted made this comment regarding grumblings about BT and if he should be canned.  Or so I heard.

If I am wrong about the Nebraska comment (and I certainly could be, as I am no insider), feel free to correct me.

Actually, your recollection sounds correct.  I was thinking about his "market rates" comment.

RE: Wisconsin-Nebraska football game canceled - qwerty49 - 10-29-2020

I remember Frank Solich as Nebraska's tough but smurf-sized fullback.  IIRC he was around 5-6 and 160.  And they ran him up the middle a lot.
