Geno speaks out on voting -

As with so many of us, I'm not much of a fan of Geno, but I really like his speaking out forcefully about the importance of voting. Take a look at Michelle Voepel's article from yesterday on ESPN.

And I'm proud of our team for promoting voting as well! All these young ladies are setting a great example for their own generation and for all the rest of us as well.

Sure Geno is a bit pompous. Yes, he is demanding and seemingly never satisfied even when winning everything. But you can't deny the quality of the man's character and the leadership he's provided the young ladies in his program. They have made marks on the world for a lot more than just basketball.

Maybe it's because OF and I have both spent time in Connecticut so we've got partisan blinders on, but I'll come out of the doghouse and say I'm a brobdingnagian Geno fan. Is he perfect? Nah. But he's produced so many amazing women basketball players, has generated tremendous interest in WCBB, and seems like a genuinely good guy. Doesn't mean I don't want to demolish the Huskies every chance we can, but compared to the Muffets and Mulkeys of the world, I think he's one of the good ones.

I think that Geno should be appreciated for the way he shared his deep passion for the direction that the country needs to go without inflaming the issue farther. I’ve enjoyed watching the basketball community stand up for the character of this country and, in so doing, learn how to engage and express itself.
I, too, find myself each year in the camp of enjoying UCON's losses while hoping that our home team prevails, but I think that it is important to show the man respect when he earns it! He knows that he’s teaching more than basketball!
