Household Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (TN & WI) - DocSavage87 - 10-31-2020

A CDC early release report came out about household transmission:

The results:
53% of family members got infected overall
53% (95% CI = 31-74%) of family members got infected when index patient (first one with + test and COVID-19 compatible symptoms) < 12 yo.
38% (95% CI = 23-56%) of family members got infected when index patient 12-17 yo

Makes sense.  Teenagers being teenagers, they like staying in their room.

I don't understand why you only gave 2 of the 4 groups.

Secondary family infections, when index patient's age is
<12   53% (31-74%)
12-17  38% (23-56%)
18-49  55% (46-64%)
50+    62% (44-77%)

Having a 95% CI of more than 2x in percentage seems very underpowered.

So, I believe we've now got studies posted that kids do get infected about as often as adults.  And we've got that they spread those infections to their families about as often.     Do I remember people here mentioning the opposite of those as part of their arguments as to how there was minimal risk to sending kids back to brick & mortar schools?

I found two other statistics interesting.  What % of each age group in the household got sick
<12:  57 (39–72)
12-17:  47 (30–64)
18-49:  59 (48–68)
50+:  43 (29–59)
Unfortunately their numbers are too low to feel comfortable in seeing differences in the age groups.

What % of household members got sick in the various sized households, by household size
2:  68 (53–81)
3:  61 (46–74)
4:  45 (31–60)
5+:  46 (35–57)
That looks to me like the caregiver of the ill person likely gets sick, but that others are less likely to get sick.

They don't give stats about parents of index children or children of index parents, or about primary caregiver.


Of the people in this study, IF all 101 index cases had no contact to a known case, then for the 203 cases in these households,  
     >= 50.25% have contact to a known case and <=49.75% have no contact to a known case.  
Santa Clara County indicates that
     41.2% have contact to a known case, and 53.6% have no contact to a known case.  
That suggests to me that SCC has fewer household transmissions than in this study.


The takeaway from this report is
Quote:Because household transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is common and can occur rapidly after the index patient’s illness onset, persons should self-isolate immediately at the onset of COVID-like symptoms, at the time of testing as a result of a high risk exposure, or at the time of a positive test result, whichever comes first. Concurrent to isolation, all members of the household should wear a mask when in shared spaces in the household
