Might this be it for Harbs? - Hulk01 - 11-01-2020

(Preface: I will always be grateful to Jim Harbaugh.  He turned us around, dramatically.  I pine for the days of Skov and Murphy.)

At Michigan, he is now 9-17 against ranked teams; 1-4 in bowl games; 3-3 against Michigan State; and 0-5 against Ohio State.

What are the odds that he's Michigan's coach in 2021?

RE: Might this be it for Harbs? - JustAnotherFan - 11-01-2020

What are the odds he makes it to the end of the season? My bigger question is who will they replace him with? They're not going to replace him with Les Miles anymore.

RE: Might this be it for Harbs? - Phogge - 11-01-2020

Obviously Shaw.

After this season, his buyout (his contract expires January 2022) would be a minimum of $5 million (articles on the topic vary in terms of the exact number).  I am sure the big-time Michigan donors could easily raise that kind of money so it is certainly a possibility.  Right now, I would put the odds at 60-40 that he will be back in 2021.

RE: Might this be it for Harbs? - Maple Leaf - 11-01-2020

I think one of the deciding factors will be the team development this year as the "season" progresses.  If the QB and the offense becomes dynamic like Stanford's Orange Bowl Team then JH will be safe.  If the team back slides even during this short season, then that could be the deciding factor in seeking a change.  I think $$$ will be a big factor this year since a majority of colleges and universities are facing financial hard times, even more so with the athletic revenue stream.  Another factor is who would be a candidate to replacement him?  Maybe a head coach from a non Power 5 conference?

so if there is no extension by early 2021 is he a "dead coach walking"?

I'd say 70-30 . . . but even that's not a lock.

J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!

P.S.  I have no doubt Jimbo has hit his expiration period in Ann Arbor (as he has pretty much everywhere else he has coached).  Also agree with comment that $$ will be tight in college football ranks, as schools will still be reeling form Covid deprivations at the gate.

No promises that Covid will not affect next season either.  We are in uncharted territory.

Echoing above - I will always be a fan of Harbaugh. He saved Stanford football.

I think the only way he saves his job is to beat Ohio State, which at this point is just short of a pipe dream.

He's burned his way through another program, and his next ride could be his last.

Don't think getting fired from Michigan is a real risk; however, not re-upping after existing contract is.  Thus, it might be a face-saving move, of sorts, for Harbs to just take an NFL job.  On that subject, Greg Papa ('Niners play-by-play and longtime industry announcer) questions what NFL team would even hire Harbs to be their head guy.  [I think the Jets would . . . no feeling beyond that].

RE: Might this be it for Harbs? - TinderForMidgets - 11-02-2020

I think he gets a pass this season because of coronavirus but next season he will definitely on the hot seat if continues this reign of mediocrity.

RE: Might this be it for Harbs? - needle - 11-03-2020

I’d be shocked if Harbaugh isn’t Michigan’s coach next year. 2020 was never going to be Michigan’s year in the Big10, not with OSU’s experienced QB and OSU generally getting oodles of love nationally.

I don’t believe there’s any scenario where Harbaugh gets fired for performance in 2020. Very few college coaches are going to get canned in a pandemic.

If Harbaugh gets fired after this season it will be because of six years, not one year.

Losing to Indiana today for the first time since 1987 can't help.

Hugh Freeze has got to be one their short list, no?  LOL

I'd guess Harbaugh fires the DC to buy time

He lost to Indiana!   That's just can't happen.   He is an alum of the school, so he should know that.

There is no buying time by firing staff, only a win over tOSU will save the job now.

Indiana is pretty good.  Happy for them.

I think he'll need a big COVID-19 assist to beat tOSU this year.......

RE: Might this be it for Harbs? - winflop - 11-08-2020

I think Harbaugh walks away before he gets fired. His goose is cooked after losing to Indiana. I get that the Hoosiers are good but that doesn't matter to the boosters who will be calling for his head on a platter starting today
