Will the last remaining CB shut out the light.

Who was it that said we are heading into the season in good shape injury-wise.  Go to hell!

How is this even possible?

This is one reason I didn’t predict a specific score for the Oregon game yet.

But how is this even possible? After no bowl game, fewer spring practices, no Cardinal White scrimmage, and fewer fall practices... How can so many players be injured before the first game?

There's some saying about three being a trend. The mass injuries two years ago looked like a complete fluke. Last year, I began to wonder if there was a trend. Folks, we officially now have a trend. Worse? I don't know how the program reverses it. I don't know anything about the training/medical staff. Other than the fact our team can't stay healthy. Hmmm...

RE: Kyu Kelly is out - Farm93 - 11-03-2020

For a number of years Stanford Football had impossibly good luck with injuries.   That may have been a function of luck, trainers, conditioning, and more.  I hope someone is looking at what has happened and how the injuries can be reduced.

However, in the NFL and in many other conferences the lack of a proper football training camp seems to have led to a number of injuries.   The SF 49ers are likely a relevant local example.    In most sports it would be rather dangerous to go from self-training and limited drills for several months to high level competition with just a few weeks of proper training.

This season will be really tough for the players.   It may be fun for teams that get off to a quick 2-0 start, but the challenges will be real.

I would say every Pac-12 fan should expect really bad tackling, a lot of formation and movement penalties, and a number of late game injuries.  I would like to think this situation might favor Stanford athletes likely to be self-motivated but going to Oregon in week #1 might be a bit too much.

Looks like Strength and Conditioning is picking up right where it left off last year. "Strength and Conditioning" in Stanford Football is an oxymoron. More like Weakness and Softening. How long can Shaw stay in denial about this?

The program is stale. Play everybody who is left. See who really wants it. With no eligibility loss why not.

We were in good shape injury-wise, until we weren't. Those are some devastating injuries not just for Oregon but for the season.

RE: Kyu Kelly is out - OutsiderFan - 11-03-2020

The Niners and Stanford have both been riding some truly remarkably bad injury misfortunate the last couple years.

RE: Kyu Kelly is out - Phogge - 11-03-2020

I don't believe in misfortune.

lex24 - lex24 - 11-03-2020

I realize this is counter-intuitive, but I wonder if the fact that they hit less in practice actually contributes to more injuries.

RE: Kyu Kelly is out - fullmetal - 11-04-2020

Well, right now they're getting injured *in* practice.  Starting to think the training staff and S&C folks are not suitable replacements.  Either that or coaches have been running players through drills that have high propensity for injury.

"Good luck" is where preparation meets opportunity.
Misfortune is where a lack of preparation meets the same opportunity and takes faceplant.

RE: Kyu Kelly is out - cardcrimson - 11-04-2020

A high school coach mentioned that the NCAA schools in California were just allowed contact starting this week.

First, is that really true?

Second, if so, how on earth are so many players getting hurt during not contact drills?

Third, if so, how on earth will the CA teams tackle and block over the next few weeks, assuming the out of state Pac-12 schools were allowing contact?

Note: ignore two and three if one isn't completely true. . . .

RE: Kyu Kelly is out - BobK - 11-04-2020

Not true. Per player and coach interviews

Thanks, didn't seem correct, but the coach was adamant.

Still a lot of injuries in practice is never a good thing.

With Kelly out, who starts across from Bonner? If Manley and Turner-Muhammad are the next two CBs up (per the depth chart), who is next in line when Oregon throws 4 WRs at us play after play after play?

IBS had a relative post on Rivals six years ago. Kinda like the guy who repped Red Grange. Think it may have been his mom. He didn't quite live up to the hype... NS.

RE: Kyu Kelly is out - CardinalSagehen - 11-04-2020

Sure, it sucks that JMF is out for the year again - I was impressed with what little I saw of him at scrimmages and in the first game last year. Kelly and Reid, for all we know at this point, could be back for the rest of the year.  I think someone said that Jordan Fox seemed to be dinged a couple weeks ago, but he's back in the mix now, so that mitigates the Reid injury a little bit.

It's not like we're talking about having lost Davis Mills here. The OL and the offense is intact.  With Covid, the departures we've seen to the NFL, and the craziness and unevenness of this year's preparation, I think the best advice for Stanford fans this year is just to enjoy the ride.

It's game week, finally. My optimism cannot be stifled. (yet)
