I understand this one had been rumored for a couple of days at least. No such story for our team, I hope!

It just shows the hair-trigger approach by Cal and/or the Pac-12, which is inconsistent with, say, Clemson and the ACC.
Trevor Lawrence tested positive and, to my knowledge, no close contacts were quarantined. He's a QB that barks orders at the line and communicates face-to-face with the entire offense.
Meanwhile, across the country, one player tests positive at Cal (to date), with daily negative antigen testing of the entire rest of the team and staff, and a game is canceled. I'm not really judging the decision, but it's definitely completely inconsistent with the rest of CFB.
Health is most important, but from a competitive standpoint, these are two of the top three teams in the Pac-12 North and now they don't have to play each other. On paper, that's actually a big advantage, although who knows what will happen going forward in this crazy shortened season...

Think the school should provide more info on reason for canceling - e.g., isolation protocol requires that X number of players total, including the entire OL position group. At least then it would make sense. I thought P12 put out numerical thresholds, anticipating Covid, which would "qualify" for game cancellation. There should be some tying of the two, assuming there is such a tie. And if there is not - i.e., if Cal just decided to not play even though they could have under P12 guidelines/rules, then that should be disclosed, too.

Quote:The Cal player who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week after his daily antigen test and follow up PCR test remains asymptomatic. He was the first member of the football program to test positive since Cal began daily testing at the start of October. Because of school and Berkeley Public Health protocols for contact tracing, the athletics department said several players are in quarantine, which affected the team’s ability to field a competitive roster.
Cal coach Justin Wilcox and Cal athletic director Jim Knowlton both agreed that team would be missing too many players to be able to adequately compete against Washington on Saturday. They said the Bears would have been left with very few scholarship players for the scheduled game at Memorial Stadium.
Wilcox had told reporters Wednesday the large number of players who are in quarantine would present “a significant hurdle” for the openers.

Based on 82lsju’s post, it sounds like the University/Berkeley Public Health protocol that requires contact tracing is what ultimately led to the cancellation. If so, would a similar situation (one positive test) lead to a game cancellation in other PAC-12 cities?

Just play all the games on EA Sports. 1940 Stanford vs the Wonder Team. Army with Blanchard and Davis against Oklahoma 1955. Makes as much sense as anything and nobody tears an ACL or infects a whole position room.

If I read the tweets correctly, the OL is likely in quarantine at home for 14 days and is not even supposed to leave their homes due to one positive test. (Oof, no practicing away from home, might be out of game shape after two weeks.)
Whether Wilcox had a choice or not, I appreciate the very public adherence to rules despite great cost. If the rules are bad, then this will be one very public case by which some rewriting is motivated. But sticking to the rules of Berkeley Public Health sets a good example for everyone. Because the Cal AD is in disbelief, I have to wonder if there's now political pressure on Berkeley Public Health to be more reasonable...after all, the 49ers are playing a game tonight with four players on their covid list.
I almost want Berkeley Public Health to write new rules for quarantine if repeated daily tests come up negative over the course of a week. Almost.

Berkeley has the same quarantine guidelines and criteria as everyone else.

Contact tracing has led to many other game cancelations. Either the players were not distancing off the field or the city considered practice to be a close contact.
Game next week is in jeopardy as cdc quarantine rules are a strict 14 days regardless of test results.

Quote:The player who tested positive is a lineman, multiple sources told ESPN, though it is unclear on which side of the ball. Either way, with his entire position group unavailable, Cal was unable to play.
"It's [a position group] that you can't play a game without," Wilcox said.
Wilcox made it clear the determination from Berkeley Public Health to place the entire position group in quarantine, plus others as close contacts, was a frustrating call because he believed the team took every step to prevent possible close contact designations.
...
A spokesman for Berkeley Public Health told ESPN the negative test results do not allow someone to exit the quarantine protocol because the incubation period for COVID-19 is believed to be 14 days.
"The reason that the 14-day quarantine exists is that's the amount of time over which somebody could develop the disease," Matthai Chakko, a spokesman for Berkeley Public Health, told ESPN. "[A negative test] doesn't cure somebody's COVID-19 and it doesn't remove the chance that the virus may appear. That's what the quarantine order is based on."

So does that mean they have to cancel next week as well? A 14-day quarantine if the contact occurred this week would imply the position group will be out next Saturday as well.

It would certainly seem that way, although the 14-day clock might have started prior to the date of the positive case for some of the close contacts.
It seems like the City of Berkeley could reasonably soften its stance, assuming everyone continues to test negative, but I doubt they will.
Can you imagine any future contact tracing interviews after a positive case in Berkeley (or at Stanford, for that matter)? “Nope, I don’t think I’ve been around any of the guys at all. I was on a spiritual quest in the woods for the last week...”
