ESPN lays off 300, Ivan Maisel included - fullmetal - 11-06-2020

Yesterday, ESPN announced that they are laying off 300 employees and will not fill 200 open/planned positions.  The pandemic has accelerated a refocusing of resources toward digital streaming content.

Ivan Maisel ('81), a highly-regarded ESPN journalist of 18 years, announced his departure yesterday as part of the layoffs.

Rough times.  Ivan is a great writer, and I look forward to his journalism wherever he lands.

That's rough.  I really liked his work.

Some of you might have attended or watched the Stanford-Oregon game in 2017 that Stanford won 49-17, with Bryce Love averaging 8.6 ypc and racking up 147 yards in the first half before hurting his ankle.  Good times.

Anyhow, a bunny ran loose on the field that night and created a sort of "Keystone Cops" scene where nobody could catch the nimble little guy for a couple minutes, until some Oregon players finally corralled it on their sideline.

This brings me to my favorite Ivan Maisel tweet of all time...

He's really good. He'll land on his feet somewhere. Maybe The Athletic.

I love his writing too, but oddly, this is the first piece of his that comes to mind:

And this sad eulogy for his son:

I couldn't imagine losing a child, it is so unutterably sad.  I know it happens.  My Stanford grandparents buried two of their four children.  And I know that mental illness lurks in our extended family.  We live special lives, but tragedy is too present.

Maisel will quickly land somewhere else. He's a tremendous talent. His "Down & Distance" podcasts are as awesome as his writing.

Plus he's one of us!
