OT - New York City’s Finest (Baseball Div.) - Giants - 11-06-2020

Bruce Jenkins posted his all-NYC team (guys who attended HS in one of the five boroughs):

1B Lou Gehrig (or Hank Greenberg)
2B Eddie Collins (or Rod Carew)
SS Phil Rizzuto
3B Frankie Frisch
OF Tommy Davis
OF Rocky Colavito
OF Manny Ramirez
C Joe Torre
SP Sandy Koufax (Whitey Ford starts Game 2)

Yes, Frisch was primarily a 2B but he played 439 games at 3B.

And, of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t add that my daughter teaches at Sandy Koufax’s Alma Mater in Brooklyn (although Lafayette HS has been repurposed into multiple high schools within the same building since Koufax’s time there).

Ok.  Football starts tomorrow.  Time to put the bats and balls away until next spring....

I think Joe D attended Galileo until he was 16.  And I think I'd take Lefty Gomez (189-102, 7x all star) out of Richmond HS in SF or Dutch Ruether out of St. Ignatius (137-95) over Mike Norris. Would also take Lefty O'Doul (Bay View HS) over Dom DiMaggio given that he has the fourth highest MLB batting average behind Cobb, Hornsby and Shoeless Joe. O'Doul is frequently not listed because he didn't play 1,000 games -- he only played 970.

RE: OT - New York City’s Finest (Baseball Div.) - Phogge - 11-07-2020

Gomez was born in Rodeo, a few miles from Richmond HS in Richmond (East Bay). There was never a Richmond HS in The City. There is a Richmond District located North Of GG Park. Washington High services the Richmond. Gomez played his semi pro ball mostly in the East Bay and in Marin at White House Pool in Point Reyes. He pitched a few games in San Francisco But he was an East Bay kid and proud of it. Nunni Brandi was considered the finest fielding third baseman in SF history but had to support an extended family and never signed. I’m a member of the SF Oldtimers Association and heard stories about Brandi for years from ex major leaguers like Dino Restelli and Charlie Silvera.

Dom may have been the greatest fielding center fielder of all time and finished with a .298 BA. He’s my guy in CF over his brother so Joe can have RF. Joe D was in some classes with my mother and she didn’t remember him being there in their first year after October. She grew up playing in North Beach Playground and watching Joe sliding on the concrete basepaths.

I read a story about Reuther in our alumni mag but actually faced Norris as an Oldtimer on Hennessey Diamond at Funston Playground in the waning days of my semi pro career.
Dazzling stuff but Dutch is a great choice Mick.

Incidentally Cronin and Heilman both went to Sacred Heart. There are only a few schools with two HOF members. Gentile went there too.

Yep, my bad.  That's what I get for trusting baseball-reference.com, which lists Gomez as having attended Richmond High School in San Francisco.
