As many on Twitter have noted, how does an athlete named for Jennifer Azzi not come play for Stanford? :(

From ESPN, summarizes her recruitment. Not a single mention of Stanford so I guess we were never really in the picture for one reason or another. Given what the article says, I wish she had come out to UCLA. In the same way that I'm glad Ionescu stayed out west. But I'm a classic "homer" when it comes to the left coast.

My first thought alliterates with her name but would trigger the profanity filter.

I was hoping Fudd would choose UCLA as I hate UConn and their ability to get the top players in the country. In the past 10 years (2012-2021 classes), they have gotten the #1 player in the country 6 times. All other universities in the country combined have gotten the #1 player in the country 4 times.
But the silver lining is that Fudd at UCLA would have drawn a lot of West Coast talent to UCLA a la Ionescu and Oregon, and I am glad we won't have to compete with that from a recruiting perspective. Other silver lining is that the top 2022 guards should be looking at UConn and thinking there won't be any playing time for themselves. Here's hoping we get some combination of 2022 guards Rice, Jones and Jackson. As well as 2022 bigs Betts, Gardiner and Nnaji. Having two #1 recruits on our team (Jones '19 and Betts '22) and then replacing Jones with Watkins '23, would certainly make up for this Fudd news.

This was not unexpected news that Fudd was joining the Huskies.
UConn will be set in the backcourt for the next couple years with Bueckers and Fudd, which promises to be their best 1-2 combo at the one and two since Bird and Taurasi overlapped for a couple seasons in the early 2000s. Plus, Westbrook and Williams give them incredible depth for the next year or two.
However, their relative weakness is their frontcourt (and I say "relative" as it is still pretty strong) with Nelson-Ododa and Griffin.
As BosCard pointed out, hopefully having Bueckers and Fudd locked in until the former graduates in 2024 will persuade other top guard prospects to look elsewhere as playing time may be limited at those two positions in Storrs for a while.
Right now, it looks like we are in the running for 4 of the top 7 prospects in the Class of '22 (Betts, Gardiner, Rice and Nnaji)? It would be a coup if we could land a couple of them to replace the graduating class of the Hulls and Brown after next season.

I always wonder in situations like this about the academics. I know nothing about Fudd except she was named for Jennifer Azzi. Of course we know with Katie Lou and Pivec that it is possible to turn down Stanford academics for other reasons, but it is very rare. The first couple of articles I read about Fudd don't mention academics and it doesn't seem to pop up in her interviews much. Maybe not a priority?
I think Stanford recruits do well to think of Kate Starbird's example. Sure, being at the top of the WBB pecking order will get you professional work after college for as much as a decade. But then you are done with basketball and have half a century of life left to live. Your college program and coach get you ready for 10 years, and the academic degree for the next 50.
