I would love to make an excuse to attend one of those games.

For the team and the players, it should be a win. I can't imagine a trip a student would want to take more, and there are a lot of great athletes in Hawaii.  At the least, it should work better than that "recruiting" trip to UCF turned out.

Normally, I'd be a bit more concerned about adding a long flight, but at least the away games will be early in the season and *before* school actually starts.

And if there was ONE PLACE you'd make an exception for, it'd be Hawaii.  Why only 4 games?    =)

Do games at Hawaii still earn an exemption from the 12 game limit?

Hawaii is great, but I'm still hoping and praying that my planned roadtrip to the Stanford @ KSU game will indeed take place next September.

RE: Football vs Hawaii - 82lsju - 11-18-2020

could be the first game in their new stadium

Quote:The first two games of the new series — Sept. 1, 2023, and Aug. 23, 2025 — will be played in Honolulu. UH’s new stadium, which is not yet under construction, is projected to open in 2023.

I thought that only applied to basketball, not football

I was going to ask if this was an effort to get a thirteenth game in two seasons. I'm not a fan of it. I think 12 is already too much.

I know the players will have turned over by then, and past results are not indicative of future performance, but randomly picking the last 4 years vs SDSU, they are 2-2 (sorry about the formatting, and I still plan to be there):

11/14/2020
2020
Home Dignity Health Sports Park - Carson, Calif.
W 34 - 10 11/23/2019
2019
Away Honolulu, Hawaii
L 11 - 14 11/24/2018
2018
Home SDCCU Stadium / San Diego, Calif.
OT L 30 - 31 10/28/2017
2017
Away Honolulu, Hawaii
W 28 - 7

Apparently the "Hawaii exemption" still exists (or at least did as of 2019)

https://fbschedules.com/hawaii-exemption-week-zero-2019-college-football-schedule/

Quote:This extra game enables Hawaii, and teams that play at Hawaii, to add additional revenue to their coffers, whether that is in the form of a road game with a guarantee or a home contest with all the revenue benefits it entails.

However, last year, none of the seven teams that made a trip to Hawaii elected to have an extra game:

Quote:Seven opponents that travel to Hawaii this season declined to add a 13th game to their football schedule. Instead, they will retain an open date and most of the FBS schools have two this season due to the calendar.

One added bonus is that we get to start playing on "week 0", which would mean an extra bye week, should we chose not to take the 13th game or if we chose to take it, the extra game would not sacrifice our bye week.

Justanotherfan is right; we should just take the extra bye.

It certainly should be, but the way things are headed, it's highly questionable by the time 2023 rolls around.

I always thought we should have SJSU and Hawaii permanently on the schedule.  Now that SJSU is 4-0, maybe not so much.  But still...

RE: Football vs Hawaii - BobK - 11-21-2020

I also thought San Jose State shouldn’t have screwed us over

Playing SJS is, always was and always will be a no-win. And I say this as a Spartan. It's just the way it is. When and if Brennan can fully emulate San Diego and Fresno, this may change. But not until then. And if he's really, really good, maybe Stanford should be interested. In him.

Worked great with Jack Elway.

Too bad we didn't realize that Dennis Erickson was responsible for Elway's offense at SJSU.
