NBA draft - BostonCard - 11-18-2020

Wonder where Terry will be drafted.  Some talk in mock drafts that it could be mid-round 1.

RE: NBA draft - BobK - 11-18-2020

Not first 13

RE: NBA draft - BostonCard - 11-18-2020

Halfway through the first round, and no Terry yet.

20 picks, no Terry.

Some had him going to the 76ers at 21.  They took a different guard.  And the wait continues.

In fact, they took a different Ty... Tyrese Maxey...

RE: NBA draft - OutsiderFan - 11-18-2020

The only thing I care about in this NBA Draft is the Warriors selecting James Wiseman.

The W's finally caught the great white whale - a legit potentially elite big man. Been waiting over 30 years for this.

RE: NBA draft - BostonCard - 11-18-2020

If he's going to be drafted in the first round, it will be in one of the last 5 picks.

RE: NBA draft - Treefence - 11-18-2020

Sounds like he's going 31 to Dallas, which is a nice fit for him.  Bill Simmons and many Ringer guys love him, it'll be fun to see him with Luka.

RE: NBA draft - JJJ - 11-18-2020

Round 2 Pick 1 Dallas!

RE: NBA draft - BostonCard - 11-18-2020

Some think it is better to wind up the first pick of the second round than at the end of the first round, because there is scope to negotiate a contract.  Still, the 31st pick of the draft has about a 5% chance of being a starter and 25% chance of being a role player (and another 25% chance of being in the deep bench).  Selfishly, I wish he had come back for one more year.

Teammate to Dwight Powell. (sorry to state the obvious to this group)

RE: NBA draft - burger - 11-18-2020

As a MFFL (Mavs fan for life), I love this.  Rick Carlisle has a long history of not playing rookies much in his complicated offenses, so don't expect to see a lot of Terry this year.  But I think his shooting will get him some playing time.

Last year KZ Okpala was the second pick in Round 2.  This year Terry goes first in Round 2.  We're a lock for the last pick in Round 1 next year.

Bigger news for Dubs is it looks like Thompson tore his Achilles.  That’s a major blow.  To say the least.

Here's hoping that's Oscar, while Ziaire is a lottery pick ;)

It's as if the Hoops Karma Gods are punishing Lacob and his fellow-owners for bailing on the City of Oakland and the Coliseum, where Ws had much success and a rabid and loyal fan base.

Obviously it doesn't work this way, but getting 19 year old 7-1, freakishly athletic Wiseman and losing soon to be 31 year old 6-6 Klay Thompson, is a trade you make everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

The Warriors now have a player on which to build the franchise around after Curry and Thompson. It's a little like having Steve Young to take over after Joe Montana, or Aaron Rodgers to replace Brett Favre.

I found it comical that so many were suggesting the W's should trade the pick because Wiseman "only played 3 college games."  Anyone with eyes who bothered to see his private workouts, limited appearances in college and all-star games, saw him interviewed, and learned about him, could see he has potentially never seen in the NBA before skills for a 7-1 player. I saw one video of him and couldn't believe he was 7-1, not because he didn't look tall, but because he handled the ball and moved like a Guard. All Wiseman talks about is wanting to learn and get better. He had a 4.0 high school GPA and probably would have been admitted to Stanford. The clincher for me was that he added 20-30 pounds of muscle in his off season. This showed he can become a 250-280 lb. physical force in addition to an athletic one, and that he is a determined hard worker. It's reasonable to project Wiseman developing an outside shot and binge a more athletic and healthier Joel Embiid.

Still, it's understandable why Minnesota took Anthony Edwards. Wiseman was seen as too duplicative to KAT, and LaMelo Ball would have cramped DeAngelo Russell at PG. But I am convinced that if Wiseman played a full college season some team would have blown the T-Wolves away with a can't turn down offer to trade the #1 pick or they might have been convinced to take him themselves.  This is why when I started looking at Wiseman a couple months ago, I thought the W's should think about trading up a spot to make certain they got him. You can't not land this kind of prospect when he's there for you to realistically draft. Giving back the #1 they got from Minny in the Russell-Wiggins trade would have been worth it. But now the Warriors have Wiseman and didn't have to give up any asset to get him. Pretty spectacular booby prize after a 15-50 injury-marred season following 5 consecutive Finals appearances.

Building around a center is not today’s NBA. game. Period.  He’s athletic. High ceiling. No question.  He’s also raw.  But the game is built around PG’s and wings.

There is no freaking way I’d trade Thompson perhaps having a career ending injury (Achilles plus ACL is not a good combo) for potential.

I was thinking the same, but I didn't want to jinx it. :)

Wiseman is so compelling because he is much more than a Center, or what people think of a Center being. Moreover, who isn't "raw" at 19 years old?  If Wiseman has a combination of foot quickness and length to defend perimeter wings - which he appears to have based on what I have observed - he can be a dominant defender in a switching defense, and be a great interior shot blocker. He knows how to set screens, a lob dunking machine, and he will be the fastest 7-footer in the NBA, making him lethal in transition. Those are all the things he gives you if he never develops outside shooting ability or a consistent offensive game.  We're looking at a 7-1 player who you could conceivably see dribble up the floor, stop and drain a 3-pt shot on one possession, then fake a shot, cross over a defender and drive for a dunk and 1 on the next. How many 7-footers has anyone here seen do that? There is video of him crossing over and driving for a layup in the Jordan Brand Classic and he's better now.

IOW, if Wiseman projected to be what most people think of an NBA Center being, then yes, that isn't the modern NBA. I'm suggesting Wiseman has upside to potentially re-define what the NBA Center position is, and we have no idea what that means for championship contention because we have never seen it before.

RE: NBA draft - Phogge - 11-19-2020

Warriors, Niners, Stanford all belonging to the Many Injured Club. I think Stanford has set a record for most ILB's on the injured list.
