Just shut down this sorry charade. The Niners have 7 players on the Covid list now. Cal has had two games canceled. Stanford now has a game canceled, bringing it to what, 18 games college canceled this weekend now?

The NFL should also stop playing. The NBA has proven it can play in a bubble, but the NFL clearly is not doing enough to stop infection spread. keeping these games going, and allowing Thanksgiving gatherings to go on sets a toned of normalization that is going to set us up for a truly unfathomably terrible December.

FWIW, according to one reporter (I posted it in the NFL thread in the covid board), lately, the NFL's cases are all inbound from community and not player to player.

Amen. Shut it down and declare all games played void. Apparently a great majority of major league baseball players can be trusted to be safe and a bunch of college kids can't be trusted with their egos.

This may be true, but it's still impacting the availability of players on the teams who must isolate and quarantine. It's tough enough being a fan when players go down with physical injuries, but now players can miss time without even necessarily being sick. But let's not forget these infected players can further infections outside their team facilities too, which leads to more community spread.

I see what you did there.

Thanksgiving gatherings and the risk/wisdom of same are completely independent of football games. As noted by Magnus, the games aren't anywhere near the problem that everyday life/community spread is.

Not sure why everyone is in a dither over this. So another college game isn't going to be played. BFD (especially as it is between Stanford and WSU - nobody cares). At some point down the road, we'll look up (or come out of hiding, or whatever we're all doing now) and the "season" will be over. Some teams may have played 10-11 games; some teams in the 0-3 games range; and who knows, there might even be a CFP and a "national champeen" crowned. Good for them. It's fine with me if it happens; it's fine with me if it doesn't. [BTW, I imagine kids in minor sports -not just football - and their families really want the games to go on, for obvious reasons].

MLB, NBA played truncated seasons during a time when infection rates were at their lowest.

There's a limited amount of things "we" can do while keeping the virus under control (and by under control, I mean, R < 1). Unfortunately, R is currently > 1, so we are already doing too many activities, so caseloads are high and rising. So, we can chose to curtail activities now or wait until cases start to overwhelm hospitals, at which point more drastic measures will be needed. The whole point is to try to avoid a second lockdown.

College kids are 18-22. It’s not their egos. They are kids. Why they had this “53 threshold“ is a little bit beyond me. If they agreed to play the season, and they did, then you play with what you got. It’s no different than having a bunch of injuries. So WSU would’ve been shorthanded. Big deal.

Is there any proof that college football is contributing to the spread? Generally, I mean. Frankly I’m not even sure it’s adding to the spread amongst the kids – who may have been more likely to get it anyway given they’re going to go out and do stuff.
