MBB: First game of the season - BostonCard - 11-23-2020

We have a WBB post; the men also have their first game of the season against Mark Madsen's Utah Valley team.

Then we are supposed to go to North Carolina to play Alabama at the Maui invitational, because it is 2020.  Of course, I would lay odds against the tournament happening, and, in any case, a cross country trip seems... unwise.

Why haven't one of you Stanford geniuses figured out teleportation?

RE: MBB: First game of the season - SamuelMcF - 11-23-2020

This should be a blowout. Utah Valley lost all its starters from last year's bad team, and is trying to fill the short-term void with a few JuCo guys and transfers from schools like GT, BYU, and UNLV looking for more PT. Mad Dog is in year 2 of a total ground-up rebuild. We know what that's like.

I'm excited to see how the freshmen look, as there should be plenty of opportunity for them to play in this one.

A WBB-MBB doubleheader? Wednesday will be fun!

Having cut my cable cord expecting no (or not much of a) season, I'm looking for Plan B for somehow getting Pac-12 Networks online. I thought you could pay via youtube but I can't figure out how. Any words of wisdom appreciated (but probably won't get around to Sling). Maybe it'll be KZSU like the old days.

Do you have something against Sling? If so, there are some other options too, including FuboTV and a new one I wasn't aware of before, Vidgo.

Thanks, for some reason, I thought I needed new equipment for Sling but apparently I can stream on my phone. Will figure it out by Wednesday!

Sling works very well.  No equipment, stop your plan and restart it when you want, record, watch on any somewhat smart TV, tablet or phone.  Only negative is that it always seems to cost more than the advertised price, but with all the flexibility they have it is a good deal.

Thanks; noted that I should expect to pay more than advertised (as is often the case in life)! :)

That sucks. Looks like the game is canceled.

At least there are no sign of positive tests for the Stanford team

RE: MBB: First game of the season - JJJ - 11-24-2020

I guess I'll figure Sling out later. The women's game seems to be streamed for free. ;)

RE: MBB: First game of the season - OutsiderFan - 11-24-2020

Jesus Mary & Joseph, are we really going to subject the college hoops season to the same nonsense as football?  Why not wait a couple months and push March Madness into May?

Basketball teams aren't going to be able to play with even one freaking positive test, with contact tracing basically involving the whole team, given the nature of the sport. Worse, college basketball teams play 2 times a week, so many games can be shaved off schedules with just one positive test.

It isn't just your teammates, it is the opponent.  If a starter for your opponent tests positive for COVID within 48 hours after a game, members of your team were legitimate close contacts.   Imagine this happening in a conference tournament, where a team may play two opponents in that 48-hour window.  And one of those opponents was planning on going to the NCAA tournament....

Nah, there's no reason that players or teams would cheat on their COVID tests...   Is anyone tracking to see if "false positives" have been more frequent in college football than in real life?

America 2020 is in a hurry. I prefer America 1955. OF is correct. Have some patience.

Did you choose that year intentionally?  (1955 being the year that the Salk vaccine came into use.  I remember standing in line in my school's cafeteria for the shot.)
(See "Cancelled" from 1955, or this from 1954.)
(For polio vaccine experience see the 45 pictures in this 2015 Houston Chronicle article covering both the Salk and Sabin vaccinations in Houston.)

They still may end up having season end in May.
I don't have a problem with healthy teams trying to get games in, especially as there is no guarantee that disruption levels will be lower in 4 or 6 weeks.  You'd like to think so, but . . .

But I start from the vantage point that competitors will be fine; that spread risk is minimal (assuming widespread competitor testing); and that the kids want to compete first and foremost.  Consider 2020-21 a "Back to the Basics" when it comes to competition for competition's sake.

RE: MBB: First game of the season - burger - 11-25-2020

Anyone still optimistic about basketball making it through this season should read this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/25/sports/ncaabasketball/coronavirus-college-basketball.html?action=click&module=Latest&pgtype=Homepage
Quote:Take Monday, for example. In a matter of hours, Tennessee canceled two games after Coach Rick Barnes and others tested positive for the virus; Duke and Georgia quashed games against Gardner-Webb after the team reported a case; the powerhouse Connecticut women’s team postponed its first four games and suspended all activities because of a positive virus test; Mississippi canceled a four-team event on its campus; and Utah called off its opening game after Coach Larry Krystkowiak, speaking from an apartment above his garage on a weekly radio show, reported that he had contracted the virus.

(Deep breath here.)

Wichita State, which pushed out Coach Gregg Marshall last week (with a $7.5 million parachute) after reports of abusive behavior, landed in Sioux Falls, S.D., just in time to learn that several team members had tested positive. It pulled out of an eight-team tournament.

(Another heave.)

Arizona State, which flew across the country on Monday, did so only after finding out that its opponent — Baylor, ranked No. 2 in The Associated Press poll — had reversed course and agreed to drop out of the Empire Classic, at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn., because Coach Scott Drew had tested positive. When Arizona State was in the air, a new opponent was procured: Rhode Island.

What a mess.  They should just put everything on hold until things (hopefully) improve later this winter or in spring.
