Has Mills proven enough to NFL? - donkey687 - 11-28-2020

Mills has a strong arm and is pretty accurate, and appears to better than Costello but how good is he?  I am not QB expert and we don't have a lot of data points and may not get many more. The reason I ask is speculating whether will he come back next year. If he is viewed as an early round draft pick, I assume he will leave, but if NFL scouts have questions and it isn't clear that he is an early round pick, will he return?

On offense, the big questions are whether Sarell, Dalman, Wedington and Mills come back. Mills is most important out of that group, but we would certainly welcome all back.

On defense, I am encouraged by our young CBs. That should be the strength of our team next year.  Booker is the key guy that we need to return. I assume that the 5th year guys Robinson, Fox, Antoine and Schaffer won't return.  Hopefully Gabe Reid will return for a fifth year.

Good question.    I think any NFL team will be wary of his injury history. Being able to get through a regular college season unscathed will help that. I certainly think he has the arm skills. But I don’t think there has been enough time to get a real grasp of his pocket presence/skills and his mobility.  He is not a dual threat QB.  But I think he has sufficient legs to play at the next level.  He moves better than Goff or Garrapolo, to name a couple.

Still, I can’t see him being a high pick in ‘21. Late rounds if at all.  If he played a full season in ‘21, I think his stock increases significantly.  One big question is - where. Does he go into the portal?  If so, I suspect he’s be looking for a top 25  program that has a QB leaving and no obvious replacement.

Just my uninformed opinion, but it "feels" to me like he needs to prove and grow more.  He's got talent, but by my unofficial count, he's started 9 games since High School.  To be a top round QB pick, a team would need to see him as their future, which seems like a tall order after 9 college starts and 13 TD passes total...?  And the team's record over those 9 games can't help either.  I think both he and Stanford would be better off if he played another year on the farm. Just my two cents.

I was disappointed in him during Big Game.

He did fine. He has a strong arm, he had fewer delay of game penalties than most Stanford quarterbacks, he is accurate, he seems to have good leadership. He is solid, but the nfl demands a lot.

My biggest concern with him right now was his lack of pocket presence. As parts of the pocket collapse, other parts were safe and he did not identify them and step into them. Sometimes just one or two steps would buy the time the play needs to develop and instead he’d bolt from the pocket. Sometimes he felt jittery.

I like him. Most importantly, I like his toughness — he will stay in the pocket and take a hit to deliver a dagger into the heart of our opponent. A number of dropped balls should have been caught. So I am a big fan of him. But I think he still isn’t where he needs to be. Overall, given his lack of mastery of the system, lack of good audibles, and lesser pocket presence, I think he’s below where Kevin Hogan was when he enteted the draft, even though I think Mills has a higher ceiling due to his accuracy and throwing consistency.

Mills missed some throws in Big Game. My read on his release is that he has a quick arm but slow eyes/head. He often throws late, after the receiver has come open. That probably cuts down on interceptions overall, but it also results in the defense making up ground and breaking up the pass. The pass he threw that was intercepted (negated by holding) was quite late. If it were thrown three of four receiver steps earlier, it would have been complete. The receiver was open forever, but the throw was late. It was also towards the middle of the field and hung up a bit. Mills obviously didn't see the safety coming over, but if he threw on time and/or toward the sideline, it wouldn't have mattered. Many have admired his great passing skills, but that pass was not one of them. He needs to speed up his processing and decision making.

I'm confident commenting on a lot of things. QB's is not one of them. I seriously doubt most here are any good at it, either. But since this is a sports board, have at it. It can't be any more amusing and ill-informed than the HVAC comments on the Covid board.

Speaking of Stanford NFL quarterbacks, Kevin Hogan was just signed to the Bengals' practice squad.

Mostly I agree!  Not sure if he is that slow, but more experience should help.  The big thing remains his knee health.

Processing and decision making improve with playing time.  This was his first start of the year in which he actually could practice.  He needs reps.  Then i think we will see improvement in those areas.  Unfortunately it looks like the season is over as the Czar has spoken.

Makes sense that he transfers to a program not facing another rebuilding year. There are few schools playing an offense featuring exclusive pocket passers so choices may be slim. He wouldn’t fit in at schools losing stars like Fields or Trask.

RE: Has Mills proven enough to NFL? - cardcrimson - 11-29-2020

Against Cal, Mills had a QBR of 54.1, and for the season it's around 60. What that means, who knows, but it puts him 70th in the NCAA this year.

I think Mills would shine at tOSU.  He has at least average mobility, and I think he would thrive in any kind of offense (other than those expecting QB runs 5-10 times/game.

But I hope he stays here.

tOSU has seven QBs on their roster, in addition to Fields they have a grad transfer (from Kentucky), two frosh (one a 5 star and #2 pro style QB recruit, the other a 4 star and #14 pro style QB recruit), two sophomores (one a transfer from Texas A&M and one a preferred walk-on), and a junior.

Kind of makes a farce of having a recruiting class with no QB. Apparently Coach Day is not afraid of one of his transferring.

Mississippi State. It's worked so well for his predecessor. . . .

I think he should play somewhere next year with a veteran offensive line and receivers, Stanford.

And a total lack of creativity in play calling from the 1000 page playbook or whatever it is.

or bringing in QB transfers given he has three on the roster this year......of course bringing in three QB transfers at Stanford......not going to happen.....although it is interesting that tOSU got a 4 star and 5 star QB in the most recent class.

If Nick Mullens is capable of winning an NFL game against a team allowing the fewest yards per game in the league, I know Davis Mills is an NFL QB.

Responding to the Subject question, I'd say "no."  But then again, Mitch Trubisky was drafted Top 5 by the Bears and had limited college resume.  All it takes . . .
