WBB Schedule - Lorcan - 12-02-2020

Good news! The Cardinal will travel this weekend to Las Vegas to play UNLV!

Women's Basketball

Stanford's four-game homestand, beginning with the Nov. 30 canceled contest against San Diego, will not be played at Maples Pavilion, and alternate dates and sites are being considered. In the meantime, the Cardinal plans to travel to Las Vegas, Nev., this week to play UNLV on Dec. 5. Additional scheduling updates will be provided as they become available.

RE: WBB Schedule - petersalas - 12-02-2020

That is excellent news!!! Thank you for posting.. definitely looking forward to their continued play and hope they can reschedule or move other 3 home games scheduled this month.

RE: WBB Schedule - JTM - 12-02-2020

Yippie Skippy!  I can't wait to see this team play again.  But I hope this will be done carefully WRT the coronavirus.

RE: WBB Schedule - oldalum - 12-02-2020

that's obviously a Lindy La Rocque special!
but I hope they can find some other willing opponents.

RE: WBB Schedule - Softball Fan - 12-02-2020

I assume the team will stay on the road until the Christmas/New Year Break.  Players will have to travel directly home to their family from the last pre-Christmas game if that's where they want to spend Christmas.  Stepping foot in Santa Clara county and they are stuck here for two weeks.

It would be nice if UNLV could put together a live stream.  This is crazy; I'm more excited about the prospect of watching a Stanford WBB game than a Stanford football game.

Edit:  This might not be high level competition:

"The Lady Rebels, picked to finish ninth in the 11-team Mountain West..."

It's not crazy! The WBB Team has a shot at snatching a natty this year, while the football team, sadly, doesn't! Kiana Williams, Lexie Hull, Haley Jones, and company make for a fun dynamic team to watch especially with newcomers like Cameron Brink.

I still can't believe that Cameron Brink has scored more points than any other debutant since Candice Wiggins in 2004.

RE: WBB Schedule - CompSci87 - 12-02-2020

Surprising!  Cal's schedule still shows UW and WSU coming to Berkeley this weekend to play at Haas Pavilion. So I was expecting Stanford might arrange to play them at Haas too, or somewhere else nearby but outside of Santa Clara County.

Maybe they looked into that but couldn't make it work; who knows.

RE: WBB Schedule - chrisk - 12-02-2020

They had no home games scheduled between December and January 8. They could play the away games depending on the type of statewide restrictions that are imposed.

RE: WBB Schedule - StanFanFam13 - 12-02-2020

Grateful to Lindy La Rocque and co. for being willing to take on the Cardinal and for allowing us to see more hoops from this talented team! Tara has done so much to mentor and act as a resource for female coaches, both through her own program as in Lindy's case and through innovations like the Women's Sports Foundation's Tara VanDerveer Fund for the Advancement of Women in Coaching (though I know that's not just for basketball). Wouldn't it be wonderful if Stanford's next few opponents came from coaches who have benefitted from Tara's guidance stepping up to help out? I'd obviously prefer that opponents be sufficiently challenging in their caliber, but at this point, I'm grateful for any (safely conducted) games and would love to see the basketball community that our coach has fostered be a part of getting her to 1098 and beyond.

WSU opens at Cal.. Stanford game officially postponed due to Santa Clara directive, but looking to reschedule game.

I wonder if anyone in the decision making power structure for Santa Clara County has thought that maybe, just maybe banning Stanford sports without any evidence that the practices or events contribute to Covids spread is an over reach that inflicts cost and risk to Stanford athletes?  And let’s not get bogged down in “setting an example” or “zero tolerance “ rules. Shutting down Stanford sports is simply not the same as banning jr high school competition.

I know they are trying to do,the right thing as they see it.  I do think their decision making would benefit from a broader perspective.
Not trying to engage in a broad based Covids debate here, just wishing for the use of a surgeons knife instead of a butchers hatchet.

Will this be the Lady Rebels reaction after the game with Stanford?

Totally agree -- not crazy at all. This WBB team is exciting to watch, and the football team is not. It's as simple as that. But don't forget the MBB -- not as good as the women, but they have potential as well.

As mentioned previously (possibly here), SCC's actions also destroy the perfect round robin symmetry of the conference schedule.  And that definitely sucks, too.

Can't those "larger context" concerns be addressed on the Covid board?

But of course that's the case - Covid is a larger concern than playing hoops.  And that's true whether or not SCC's Health Officer unilaterally imposed the restriction that prohibits round-robin play at Stanford.

But that's a great tag line for . . . well, for pretty much any post on a sports fan board talking about sports.

So let me say right here:  the women's basketball team playing at UNLV is a rather trivial concern in the larger context.

RE: WBB Schedule - BostonCard - 12-03-2020

Teejers, even allowing for a healthy debate on the "should they or shouldn't they be allowed to play", "the schedule will lose its symmetry" is pretty trivial.

RE: Mudhead - petersalas - 12-03-2020

I am glad that basketball is being played and I’m all for games being played if they can be continue being played safely. I’m really hopeful that games can be moved or rescheduled for Stanford due to SCC ban until it’s lifted. It looks like the CA order that will be out tomorrow per LA Times is allowing for professional sports without spectators.. it didn’t indicate anything about college sports so I hope it’s the same.

Sorry folks, I’m a fan.  Stanford women’s basketball will never be trivial to me. Excellence is too rare to be short circuited with “trivial”. In tha context it’s being used here, WBB should never be played. It is always “trivial” compared to war, world hunger or pestilence . But we dont stop playing it or watching it or supporting it .  Why? Because Stanford playing its schedule does not affect those other things.  Whether we play or no there will be war, there will be hunger and there will be disease.

NOW , if someone would just explain how Stanford women practicing basketball and playing games, sans fans, at Maples has any impact on .Covid 19 in Santa Clara County, maybe my thick head could understand why it has been banned.  But that case has not been made. There are no data, much less science to connect the two.

Very sad decision for all Stanford sports but especially for these WBB players who have a chance for greatness .

I guess that depends on how you measure trivial.  I'd also point out that in year where conference tourney is not happening, a RR becomes pretty important to the fairness of determining a champion.  Now, you may counter that "we'll never get a full RR as Covid will take games out left and right" and that's a fair point.  But then doesn't it make "gratuitously" removing games - i.e., not allowing games to be played where teams are healthy and following protocols - even a bigger deal?

P.S. What are the chances a Stanford player/staffer gets Covid in Vegas? I'd say higher than the chances had they remained on campus. Good grief.
