ACC announces its new commissioner - Spiny_Norman - 12-17-2020

The ACC has named the Northwestern AD Jim Phillips as its new commissioner. Bernard Muir was a serious candidate. There are influential alumni who were hoping that Muir would get the job, forcing the Stanford administration to make a change at the top of the Athletic Department.

If you don't want the guy you have, why wait for him to leave you?  Why not tell him to get lost?

Because the Venn diagram of "you" and "the people who make the decision" are not overlapping.

I'm assuming that most folks want Bernard Muir gone because of the cancellation--and the stated reasons and finality for said cancellation--of 11 varsity sports programs. That's fair enough, but is there still a belief that, with Muir gone, at least some of these sports will be reinstated? My sense is that the University will put the kibosh on reinstatement with or without Muir, but maybe I'm mistaken.

BC, does the Venn Diagram come from the Van Allen Belt?

I don't want him gone for the cancellation. I want him gone for overseeing the financial situation that forced the cancellation. He continued to grow the Athletic Department based on projected conference revenues despite increasing annual shortfalls due to the ongoing failures of the Pac-12 Network. This gap had been growing for at least three years, and Muir did nothing to restrain growth (and cost). The COVID came and it exposed his lousy financial management.

A key ingredient of this failure was his "oversight" of the bell cow program that drives department revenue.  The red flags have been apparent for years - a glance around the stadium on game days provided a regular reminder.
The 7 football recruits who were actually admitted to Stanford and decided to go elsewhere are the latest flag.

I think this is also sending a message that David Shaw will receive. You may all remember Shaw talking about a recruit he really wanted telling him "I am not going to Stanford because your team just isn't good enough to effectively utilize my skills" or something to that effect. Shaw said he never wanted to hear that again. In effect, that might be what these guys are telling him by going elsewhere. It also might be there is a back story on each one that we just don't know, but if not I think Shaw will get the point. End thread hijack.

But, but, but what about the 40 year decision?

And as for the cancellations. It had to happen. How else could Muir keep the staff of 40+ assistant/associate athletic directors someone pointed out that we have on staff?

This sounds like an "oh sxxt" moment.  I remember years ago, when I was young and running sales for a large firm.  We missed out on a large prototype machine shop that was, quite literally, the perfect client for us.  There wasn't a single firm in the valley that knew that business like we did.  And the CFO said to me, the words that no one likes to hear "Well, we just switched firms, so we're not about to do so again."  What he said next was most instructive "well, don't worry, our specifications were quite exact.  We had to have a local firm, we didn't want a national shop.  We needed one with at least 25 accountants, so some size.  And they had to have a specialty in prototype machine shops."  I rattled off the names of a dozen clients.  There was a stunned silence.  He said "well, I don't know how we missed you.  We looked at six separate firms."  I then rattled off the names of the six competing firms, and he confirmed that those were the six that bid on the work.

We spoke for another 1/2 hour.  I learned more about my firm and its perceived value than I had during any other single conversation, and it was very unnerving.  We ended revamping much of the way we went to market, how we networked, how we served clients, etc.  Top to bottom changes.  And it all started with that one canary in the coal mine.

Seven admits that turns down Stanford.  Man.  If that isn't screaming "problems," I don't know what does.  If I were the AD, I would reach out to each of the parents, the student and the football coach and do a very, very substantial debrief.  Candidly, I'd probably hire someone outside the University to do it.  Because something is going drastically wrong when admits are turning down Stanford.

RE: ACC announces its new commissioner - fullmetal - 12-18-2020

If the ACC had poached Muir, it would have allowed everyone to save face.  As it is...there will be no easy decisions, although I promise that I would nearly forgive Muir and MTL if they would just walk that decision back.  I think everyone affected by the cuts would be grateful to have just a chance to have their voices heard and be involved in the decision-making (unlike how it all went down initially).

The alumni want to have a good working relationship with the AD and university going forward.  There is no path forward if we hold grudges now that cannot be forgiven.

And yes, if you read the official budget book, "contractual obligations and a planned generous salary program to match the overall university program" are driving compensation expenses.  Add facility expenses ("due to...lack of a deferred maintenance program") and travel expenses ("an increased need to provide charter travel for select programs").  I wonder if those select programs were included in the cut list.

As for why not get rid of Muir now, Stanford Athletics is a large, unique ship to steer, and to change the captain in the middle of a pandemic requires selecting someone who can do the job better.  Choosing a better captain is a multi-million dollar bet, and as much as I want the 11 sports reinstated, I'm not sure replacing Muir right now without a plan is a great idea.
