Very sad indeed. That's at least 3 players from the 2009 team who have passed away - Tyler Mabry, Ekom Udofia and Konrad Reuland.

Looks like he was dealing with some serious mental health issues. I don't want to draw the connection to CTE if it is not there, but it would definitely be worth investigating.
I cannot imagine the pain his family must be going through. He graduated high school as one of the nation's top recruits, and was headed to Stanford, where two older siblings had gone. They must have all felt at that time that his future was so bright.

Add to that Zach Hoffpauir (class of 2016), and also the mental health issues that Jonathan Martin has been battling.

Is the Stanford AD/football alumni network doing enough to support its young alumni after graduation? I read an article about the University of Texas increasing their efforts recently in this regard (I cannot find that article for the life of me right now)...I wonder if there isn't enough alumni networking/outreach/mentorship in place. I certainly didn't see much of that in my career, though I wish I had.

Another option would be to rethink college football as currently played. I honestly can't enjoy the sport anymore because of stuff like this, which is far too common to be coincidental. So, so sad.

A tragedy, no question. But do you have evidence that mental health issues exist at a higher rate for ex-college football players then for the general population? We tend to look the other way when it comes to mental health problems. That needs to change. They are far more prevelant than we care to admit.

Very true Lex. A cousin, normal kid till he hit college where he developed serious mental health issues. Paranoia, voices, the whole gambit. Don't think he ever played a down in high school. Late 40s now, he has somewhat of a normal life, but still under a lot of care.
Shame on our society for turning a blind eye to mental health problems, opioid addiction, etc. and instead funding, oops, better stop as I might be perceived as too political.
Love the cleats idea. Way too long for the NFL to actually step up . . . .

Thanks. One question is if more issues arise when the games end. Such a big part of ones life to that point. And then it’s gone. I imagine that can be very hard.
