Roster decision thread - donkey687 - 12-20-2020

The prospects for our team will be determined by the decisions our players make in the next few weeks whether they are going to return.

Here are the decisions ranked in importance to next years outlook for Stanford. I assume that all 5th years don't return for a sixth year but it would certainly be a bonus if one or two of Robinson, Shaffer, Fox, Antoine returned as they play positions of need. I only list 3 juniors with decisions to make as I only view 3 of them as NFL prospects at this point (Fehoko, Wilson, Booker). The WR corp will be unit most impacted by decisons.

1) Davis Mills- Go Pro or Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year
2) Simi Fehoko- Go Pro as a Junior or Return (I think NFL would love his measurables)
3) Thomas Booker- Go Pro as a Junior or Return (not sure if he is a real pro propsect)
4) Dalman- Go Pro or Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year
5) Sarell- Go Pro or Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year
6) Wilson- Go Pro as a Junior or Return (not sure if he is a real pro prospect)
7) Weddington- Go Pro or Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year
8) St. Brown- Go Pro or Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year
9) DWP- Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year or Retire
10) Reid- Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year or Retire
11) Fisk- Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year or Retire
12) Heimuli- Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year or Retire
13) Backups: Noah Williams/Ryan Johhson/Keck- Grad Transfer or Return for 5th Year or Retire

My completely uninformed guess is that Mills, Sarell, Fehoko and Dalman will try the NFL and at least 2 players listed in the top 12 (OSB perhaps?) will grad transfer and a couple backups will grad transfer.

One thing this strange short season has shown us is that we can win games with a lot of unheralded "next man ups."  IMO, the only player that would really hurt our chances for winning if he leaves is Mills.  Of course if we want to win championships, we will need some unheralded guys to become stars, like we saw happen in Fehoko.

RE: Roster decision thread - BobK - 12-20-2020

Great list. Since the some can return and not count against the scholarship limit hope for great news. Fehoko is married so that enters into his decision.

Simi Fehoko, a 4 star recruit top 100 player in the country coming out of HS, is unheralded to you? Jesus christ.

RE: Roster decision thread - BobK - 12-20-2020

Angry? Come on. We just had a trifecta it’s a great day

RE: Roster decision thread - SamuelMcF - 12-20-2020

Maybe not as relevant since he opted out of the season and is a walk-on, but Dylan Boles is grad transferring to FCS Northern Iowa. Would be a sweet deal if he's getting a scholarship there, and his Iowa hometown is 2 hours away.

RE: Roster decision thread - BostonCard - 12-20-2020

After yesterday, I would really like to see what Mills to Fehoko could do in a full season.  I don't think I will get to see it, but it's fun to think about.

How about "unproven?"  Many 4 star recruits never become stars on the college level.  We've had our share of those.

Remember too that no one used up a year of eligibility this year, so the following also could come back if they wanted to.  Note that I wonder if our fifth year seniors (other than Isiah Sanders) are in graduate programs, and whether it is possible to grad transfer from one graduate program to another.

Isiah Sanders: Return for a sixth year or retire (probably depends on whether he finishes his grad degree)
Dorian Maddox: Return for a sixth year or grad transfer or retire
Scooter Harrington: Return for a sixth year or grad transfer or retire
Thomas Schaffer: Return for a sixth year, grad transfer, or retire
Jordan Fox: Return for a sixth year, grad transfer, or retire
Curtis Robinson: Return for a sixth year, grad transfer, or retire
Treyjohn Butler: REturn for a sixth year, grad transfer, or retire
Malik Antoine: Return for a sixth year, grad transfer, or retire
JJ Parsoms: Return for a sixth year, grad transfer, or retire
Jet Toner: Return for a sixth year, go pro, grad transfer, or retire (not sure how good a pro prospect he is after his game against Oregon)

Of the above, Schaffer, Robinson, Antoine, and Toner are all starters.

Setting the Pac-12 record for yards per reception last year was "unproven" to you?

Fans can track activity in the transfer portal at https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Football/TransferPortal/

I counted 69 QBs and 53 RBs already in the portal.

You missed my point.  He became a star at Stanford.  I never said he was unproven until this season.  My point is that we need more guys to develop into impact players before we can expect to win championships.  On the average, our recruits have more ground to make up coming in than Alabama's recruits.  I'm sure the Tide has quite a few top rated recruits that don't pan out, but they can afford some misses when they have so many 4 and 5 star guys coming in each year.

If you want to argue every point on this board, that's fine.  Fehoko did not set the record for receiving yards per reception last season.  His 2019 mark of 23.6 ypr is 5th all-time in the Pac-12.

Emphatically agreed, and a reason there is so much concern about the incoming recruiting class (and lack of development by plenty of older players on the team). Fewer bites at the "elite recruit" apple.

It was not the Pac-12 40+ years ago. He has the Pac-12 record.

Wouldn’t a player still need to be enrolled academically to use the “extra” year of eligibility? I wonder if any of them are stopping out winter and/or spring quarters to delay graduation (this pandemic year would be a good one to be out of school).  Other than those readying for the NFL combine, is stopping out a possible sign as to their intentions about coming back?

Touché!

RE: Roster decision thread - Phogge - 12-20-2020

Of those possible six year players I don’t see any NFL prospects. Of the others I expect Dalman (redshirt senior) to go, Mills probably and Fehoko maybe. If Sanders gets his degree does’t he have a service obligation? So breaking in a new QB means a rebuilding year even if he learns to hand off.

RE: Roster decision thread - Goose - 12-20-2020

I think it is anyone's guess where Mills might go in the draft. He has shown some good skills but he hasn't really played a continuous full season yet. He also has an injury history that will work against him. It comes down to whether he thinks he will be first round next year if he returns and will not be first round if he goes. Hard to know. It also may be partly determined on how good (or not) he expects Stanford to be next year. Hard to get positive press on a bad team.

In any event, the offense should be better next year if he returns. OL will continue to improve, rb and wr fine, and maybe a TE will emerge. Whether we can stop anybody will continue to be a question.

Apparently the NCAA members will vote next month whether to offer all football players a 1 time immediate-eligibility transfer.

Quote:The one-time transfer rule, years in the making, is expected to become a reality next month when it is voted in at the NCAA Convention. It is still not certain when it will become effective, but coaches are planning on August -- the beginning of the 2021 season -- at the latest.
