$2million Rose - JJJ - 12-31-2020

A Rose by any other name...

Quote:The College Football Playoff semifinal in Texas will be allowed to call itself the Rose Bowl Game, but Pasadena officials don’t want the New Year’s event relocated in the future.
The Pasadena city council agreed Wednesday to allow the Tournament of Roses to move the game to Arlington, Texas, on New Year’s Day. No. 1 Alabama will play fourth-ranked Notre Dame in the first CFP semifinal at AT&T Stadium outside Dallas.
The Tournament of Roses will pay the city $2 million to help Pasadena with its expenses and lost revenue as a result of the game being relocated.

How much is the Tournsment of the Roses getting?

RE: $2million Rose - Leftcoast - 12-31-2020

WHOA NELLIE!

"The Grand Daddy of them All" is going to be played in Texas? That's just crazy.  Call it something else - Anything else.  Having been to that part of Texas once or twice I suggest "The Barbecue Pit".   True on several levels.

There's only one Rose Bowl and it is played at the <ahem> ROSE BOWL in Pasadena.

That slight tremor you are feeling is Keith Jackson rolling over and over in his grave.

RE: $2million Rose - winflop - 12-31-2020

The last time the Rose Bowl wasn't played in Pasadena was in World War II when the threat was of being bombed by the Japanese Navy. That was an actual risk to the lives of those who would have attended. Plenty of examples of being able to have an outdoor sporting event with small numbers of socially distanced and masked attendees with zero COVID spread.

Strange justification.

Japan had no aircraft capable of flying to LA and had very little ability to haul an entire task force to the West Coast.   And once there, there was no way a football stadium in Pasadena would have been a key target.   Japan never had any plan to attack the West Coast of the USA, other than by those nifty balloons, so the actual risk of death in Pasadena to the Japanese Navy was pretty close to zero throughout the war.

However, it is a near certainty that those fans in the stands are increasing their risk of getting COVID.   It is not just the seats in the stands.  There are ample opportunities to spread the virus before (tailgating), during (concessions and restrooms), and after the game.

Given what we know about COVID, even before the latest UK mutation, and the lack of compliance with mask-wearing by typical SEC/ACC fans it is easy to predict that a football game will lead to some level of case spread.   That would then create some level of hospitalizations and deaths.   The LA Basin has no available hospital ICU capacity to handle any increase in COVID so a game would likely also cause delayed health care and possibly deaths to others without COVID too.

FWIW - the CFP semis are boring and predictable at this point.   Clemson and Bama will be in the championship game.   There really is no reason to increase the CA death rate just so that Bama or Clemson could win in the Rose Bowl.

If the Japanese weren't a concern, why were there blackouts up and down the west coast during the war? The beacon on top of Mt. Diablo was turned off on December 8th, 1941 for the remainder of the war. Now it is lit only on December 7th in remembrance.

Actually, not so. Japan could and did bomb the USA via a seaplane launched from a submarine. Granted, it did no real damage and in fact the US was unaware of a specific risk to a football game. It is also true that Japanese submarines did shell the Pacific coast, although totally ineffectively.

It was 1941 and the decision was made just after Pearl Harbor had been hit. There was little the US Navy could have done to stop the Japanese carrier task force from sailing to our west coast. I don't think we really knew whether the Japanese Navy could do it, but that decision made sense. This one doesn't

Given that your history lesson was, well, somewhat lacking in fact, I'd love to hear you explain your comment regarding the "typical SEC/ACC fan" and their mask wearing? You do realize the highest Covid rate in the world right now is in California, particularly Southern California, don't you? So help me understand why So Cal is so much worse than SEC and ACC territory. Please share the facts behind your slander comment. Bias isn't just race, is it?

And besides, why would anyone want to come to California right now, especially Southern California? It might just kill them.

And evidently, neither is elitism.  But we've seen the gratuitous crack against "the South" and "flyover country" (remember when North Dakota was taking its beating? - has anyone commented on ND lately?) in these parts.

Whatever.  Not big on recriminations, regardless of geography.

Everyone just needs to be smart, attentive, and considerate of others - especially now in CA.

As for the Rose Bowl moving to Texas - it just seemed like a win-win thing to do, and I don't know why anyone is insisting on the name.  Whatever.   Not a particularly ground-shaking matter.

And, yet, here in SEC/ACC country I just enjoyed a nice meal in a small restaurant, socially distanced and with masks except at the table, of course.  My kids are still going to school (in person, which is what “going to school” actually means).  And, strangely, all the holier-than-thou Californian elitists can’t fathom that life is actually better elsewhere, even when it comes to Covid spread. But, rest assured, they are doing their part. Just ask them.

The rose bowl moving is a matter of politics and not actual science.  But the politics and science are on the wrong side this time. I hate it for Pasadena, but you get the leaders you deserve, and LA county has proven that in spades.

RE: $2million Rose - Snorlax94 - 01-01-2021

How is it that so many threads turn into worship of Nick Saban or some kind of talk or peaen to life in the Southeast.

Farm93 simply mentioned that if SEC/ACC fans were less likely to wear masks, that could lead to spread, which is a particularly risky proposition in SoCal these days. It was actually a criticism of SoCal. Each part of that statement is probably true.

All the repeated, unprompted praise of Saban comes off as hyper-defensive. I have a lot of family in the SEC territories. I visit there. I have received generous offers from in laws (free housing, real estate) to move there but personally am uninterested. But I can see how there are a lot of things people really like there.

But it is a reasonable, factual statement to say fans from the SEC and ACC regions probably wear masks less, and it’s a reasonable, factual stament to say that could be an unwise combination with SoCal at this time.

Not a Saban fan.

Good clarification on the criticism of SoCal. I certainly didn’t read it that way. It read as typical snark.

There are very different social and legal pressures at play in different regions. Suffice it to say at this point that, absent living on a literal (or figurative) island that is closed to visitors, everybody is at risk and nobody knows for sure exactly how to manage that risk down to zero. Common sense would say that masks help, and distancing, and hand washing, but it isn’t clear exactly who or how they exactly help. The rose bowl certainly didnt miss much by losing the game this year. Will there be a parade?

RE: $2million Rose - Phogge - 01-01-2021

Driving around Marin it is extremely weird to see someone not wearing a mask. 200,000 plus people, about 130 deaths. 27 inmates and staff at Q, 85 or so at senior institutions so very few people in the general population. Can it be proved that masks work PL? Probably not but it seems so in our county.

RE: $2million Rose - BostonCard - 01-01-2021

Speaking of Saban, the one good thing going is he is exposing the Domers.  Alabama has had three drives so far, all touchdowns.  They have had 13 first downs and only faced a single third down.

Unbelievable display of offense.

RE: $2million Rose - cardcrimson - 01-01-2021

Was Saban even mentioned in this thread before you brought him up? Farm's comment was as snarky as can be, and you know it. A criticism of So Cal? Please. A strain on So Cal Hospitals? The Domers and Tide families would have been home for days before they would have been diagnosed.

Perhaps the right thing for So Cal to say, would have been "We've screwed this Covid thing up so badly at the moment, it would be unsafe for the teams and their families to come to Southern California. For their safety, we recommend moving the game elsewhere."

And I have to admit, nothing says Rose Bowl more than Texas and the house that Jerry Jones built. . . .

Notre Dame is now 0-7 in New Years 6/playoff games, many (most) of them blowouts, like today.

Ian Book did not help his draft stock.
