Re: The view from up north - CompSci87 - 10-23-2011

Unintentionally funny reader comment left on one of the articles:

What amazes me, is that Standford is a top 5 team, and they barely get 50,000 people at their games.

The "low attendance" meme just won't quit, even when we sell out our 50,000 seat stadium.

Re: The view from up north - Robbie - 10-23-2011

I listened to most of the game on the Husky broadcast network. (I was stuck in the car.) It started with pregame projections of "It'll be a close, high-scoring game and the UW will win with a last-second field goal". I'm not sure even they believed it. Then as the wheels came off they became despondent. Finally, through much of the third quarter and all of the fourth they were continually talking about whether Stanford had the ability to go to and win the BCS title game. The consensus was that the Cardinal have as good a chance as any PAC team in a number of years.

Re: The view from up north - fullmetal - 10-23-2011

Crowd shots of Husky and Sooner fans toward the ends of their respective games looked the same.  Despondent fans with their heads in their arms bemoaning fate...

Loved it.

Had a lot of fun razzing some loud UW fans in section 238 yesterday. Dunno which alums sold off their giant group of reunion section seats in the front of the section, but they cleared off with about 11 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Woof woof woof woof.

Re: The view from up north - Robbie - 10-24-2011

Just now watching the ESPN3 broadcast. One quote - at a commercial break with 7:30 left they left the microphone open. Quote from the announcer:
"Our first bad game of the year."

It seemed like a damned good game to me.

What a strange comment to hear. Both Millen and McDonough called a game so depressing that this fictionalized account is not exaggerating by much: (god I love you, EDSBS):

Whereas the Stanford-Washington game featured a team executing at a very, very high level. Actually, I think UW playing at its best could beat either State or OSU, also. So, really, just strange.

Maybe "bad"= "uncompetitive"

Re: The view from up north - Farm93 - 10-24-2011

Oh, bad definitely meant blowout.  From a broadcasting perspective the crew at Stanford had the worst game of the night.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan State became an instant classic on the ESPN family of channels.
Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma was not quite so crisp, but it was newsworthy as one of the big 4 lost.

Washington vs. Stanford was just boring, especially for football fans not affiliated with Stanford.  With the score of 38-14 at half, there was no way to make is seem like the outcome was in doubt.  Stanford had a big lead AND Washington had not displayed any ability to stop Stanford.  That makes it a "bad" game.

Commentators dream of calling "good" games with miracle finishes, like the one in East Lansing.

Wow.  Weird.  I was just going to post this except with bad punctuation.

WIM, that is an outstanding link from EDSBS.  I have not laughed at anything as hard in ages.  A mix of Nietzsche and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.

I wasn't watching at the time.  But I came home and watched the broadcast on my DVR.  I loved the Mom comment, and it was probably true.  Anyone with an ability to change the channel had to have switched over to the other games by halftime.

Re: The view from up north - fullmetal - 10-25-2011

No way :)  This was a game to savor until the very end!  It was one of those good things in life upon which our good friend Conan once pontificated.

Re: The view from up north - yvonne - 10-25-2011

For those of us who remember the Washington teams from the 1980s and 1990s, it was a thing to savor. Those guys had an 11-game win streak against us. We won one, and then they whipped off another six-game streak!

Irrespective of the opponent, it was a historic night. We scored 65 points, had over 600 yards of total offense, and had more rushing yards than the opponent had total yards. That doesn't happen every day, and that it happened to a ranked opponent made it all the more incredible. This was one for the ages!

Fortunately or unfortunately, our students don't realize how special this is.
