There will be a bonanza of players declaring all over the country. Hope this kid has a chance as an UFA but it's a very long shot.

Really wish the NFL declaration process was set up like the NBAs where you could go to the combine/have a pro day and then opt out of the draft and either return to the same school or go into the transfer portal. These guys have to make some very difficult decisions and are doing so with very incomplete information.

Schaffer was such a pleasant surprise this year. He came in as a project and turned into a really reliable piece for the team in this weirdest of years. I hope he beat the odds.

I think players like Schaffer and Antoine know they are longshots to make the NFL but are ready to move on with their life one way or another. If they make it in the NFL, great, but I suspect that even if they don't, they're looking forward to starting a career somewhere.
As someone else has noted, Schaffer became a valuable contributor this year so good for him.

I wear the 'someone else' label with pride.

I certainly didn't expect him to come back for a 6th year but it would have been nice. DWP coming back for a 5th year is pretty important given our lack of depth on DL. If we are somehow able to recruit a grad transfer, DL and Safety would be positions of greatest need. If Gabe Reid doesn't return, OLB is another place where a grad transfer would be key. Trent Murphy's brother would be a nice addition.
Speaking of Safety's, what do you think Jonthan McGill is referring to in this tweet posting his highlights and talking about trying to change the culture?

Maybe he's referring to our defense's lack of performance in recent years and our 4-8 record in 2019. McGill's entering class was large and pretty good - it contains most of our returning OL, our RBs, and our secondary. I can imagine them feeling like this team is becoming theirs now.

I wouldn't count on Connor Murphy being able to transfer in. Graduating from U$C with a 3.4 GPA probably doesn't make the cut with admissions

Agree completely.
Be a great story if he makes a team. Reminds me of watching a game years ago when Bob Trumpy was the analyst. Toni Fritsch was the kicker for one team and I think Uwe Von Schamann (I know I butchered the spelling) the other. Both were from Austria and as Trumpy noted, perhaps the only NFL players that could have a conversation in Austrian.....
Edit: so not Von Schamann. He was German. Looked up players from Austria. Ray Wersching was one. So maybe that was the other kicker.

I was going to laugh at "a conversation in Austrian" since the official language of Austria is German. But then I looked on the web for more info. There is Austrian German, which is the official language and differs not very much from the standard German of Germany. There's also a widely spoken dialect called Austro-Bavarian that differs enough that it's hard for those who speak only standard German to understand. There are some other dialects spoken in parts of Austria too.
