Important game and a week in which we can make our case as a top 25 team. Today is a day where we could really use at least one of Daejon or Bryce back for defensive purposes. While Utah is ostensibly led by 6-6 forward Timmy Allen, the strength of the team is the backcourt, where the speedy and disruptive Rylan Jones could cause us trouble. He has struggled late from three, but he is a good shooter and his combination of speed and range could be a problem for anyone not named Daejon or Bryce. Jones is paired with Alfonso Plummer in the backcourt and Plummer is the big deep threat whose threes account for more than half of his shots. Plummer is streaky, but he has nailed four threes in 3 of Utah's 9 games.
Our inside play should be critical. Utah is a weak rebounding team and has been outrebounded by 5.4 boards per game. 7-0 center Branden Carlsen is foul prone. He is aggressive and likes to go for blocks, so Oscar and company need to take the game to him. Riley Battin is the other big guy who rebounds. He is more of a glue guy.
Utah also has a Scandinavian connection. Freshman Swede Pelle Larsen shoots threes at over 50% and is a playmaker at 6-5. Sophomore Finn Mikael Jantunen is a solid all-around player at 6-8. He shoots threes at 46%, but is also foul prone.
The starting lineups have shifted somewhat, but Utah is really only seven deep. Highly rated frosh Ian Martinez has yet to deliver on his recruiting hype.
If we can defend the perimeter, slow down Jones, win the battle of the boards and keep Oscar out of foul trouble, I like our chances.

I just read that Carlsen is questionable for tonight. Apparently he injured an ankle late in the Colorado game. Let's hope our injury luck starts to turn.

For those with Sling "blue," you get Pac-12 channels but not ESPN channels. Sling "orange" gets ESPN channels but not Pac-12. I just found Vidgo.com which includes both Pac-12 and ESPN channels along with a total of 85+ channels* for $55/mo and a promotion of the first two months for $10/mo. Just another option to follow our teams without cable or satellite TV.
*Also includes the following sports channels: Big10 Network, ACC Network, FS1, FS2, Longhorns Network (for Oman), NFL Network, NFL Redzone, and SEC Network.

So I paid $30 this month and will pay $40 from next month. JFYI.

I am really excited that Bill Walton is not covering the game today.
HOWEVER, I really wish the NCAA would require teams to stick to natural wood colors for the courts.
The ultra bright white floor at Utah is almost as annoying as Oregon's court. I am sure it is fine for those playing, but just ridiculous for those fans watching on TV.

That second charge call on Da Silva was BS. Defender was not set. We're down 1.

Terrible first half for Stanford. Only 25 points on 28% shooting. We trail by 9 at the break. We have 4 players with 2 fouls. The only bright spot is we are 4-9 from outside the arc. ZW leads our scorers with 8. Davis with 7. ODS with only 3, having sat a good part of the 1st half with 2 fouls.

That was hard to watch. Utah used good ball-handling, good movement and a lot of screens to get the ball into the paint a lot.
Stanford could not penetrate Utah's defense. They made only three 2 pointers in the entire half. Da Silva sat for the final 7 minutes of the half with 2 fouls.
The announcers noted how hard it has been for Stanford to win in SLC. Last victory at Utah - 2013.

I put that more on Da Silva. Twice he lowered his shoulder and twice got called. Neither time the defender was set, but the ref will call charge every time if he keeps that up. He's gotta play smarter in the second half and finish his drives. We'll see if Stanford can be the 3rd or 4th team this season to come back from a big halftime deficit against the Utes.

Da silva is the ultimate tease. Every time he goes on a tear for a few games, he comes back down to earth with a stinker. The first foul was understandable, but he didn't learn from it. Dude, you're a senior, co-captain and the supposed leader of this team. Don't do that!

Utah is 1-4 in the Pac-12 with losses against the LA schools, Oregon, and Colorado, and only a win against winless Washington.

Maybe, but all credit to Utah. They'd be beating any P12 team now the way they're playing is my guess. My feeling from the start has been: split this road trip and all is well.
