Duke's AD to retire - BrevinsBest - 01-15-2021

Duke's AD, Kevin White has announced that he is retiring. I'm guessing this is a role that Bernard would be interested in. Thoughts?

Is that really a step up though? I would think the only thing Duke has that Stanford doesn't is a powerhouse Men's bball team and in a more respected conference. Besides those two things, Stanford has them beat.

I hope Muir stays however his daughter will play volleyball for Duke next year

As an alum of one of the 11 sports cut by Muir, this would be music to my ears if he left for Duke. Duke is a step down from Stanford but the daughter being there and Muir's basketball background could make that job enticing.

Fixed it for you. If Muir ever desires to leave Stanford before retiring, this would be his obvious move, and with his daughter starting school there, I'd put the odds at better than 50/50.

All of the above assumes Duke will be interested in hiring him. Do we know that is true?

Oh please oh please oh please...

RE: Duke's AD to retire - 82lsju - 01-15-2021

didn't Muir work for Kevin White at ND? If he did then White could have some influence on Muir getting an interview and/or offer...

Can the cuts be attributed to Muir?

RE: Duke's AD to retire - fullmetal - 01-15-2021

Very much so.  He's always considered program cuts to be a good first option when it comes to AD optimization.

Yes, as these 11 sports have come forth with fundraising plans to make them self funded, Muir continues to block it in the name of focusing on higher priority sports.  He keeps on talking about how only Ohio State had more varsity sports than Stanford. Well, Harvard and much of the Ivy League has 15 more varsity sports than Stanford post cuts and 4 more pre-cuts. Why aren't we comparing ourselves to our academic peers who support these Olympic sports in the name of offering them to the student body not in the name of revenue generation? The covid budget crisis was used as an excuse for Muir and his bloated staff to focus on higher priorities and sell the cuts to the Board. He doesn't want alums supporting the crew and wrestling teams when they could be donating to a new basketball workout facility.

Bloated staff? I think someone posted awhile back that we had more associate or assistant ADs than sports teams. I'm sure they're all very necessary. . . .

It's worth noting that people like Mike Eubanks are on the AD staff, even though they are really working for the football team.  In fact, Eubanks is one of three "Associate Athletics Directors" on the football staff:

Banks are known for numerous VPs. What’s in a title? Well the title if salary can’t be raised

RE: Duke's AD to retire - fullmetal - 01-15-2021

Quote:Compensation expenses are increasing due to contractual obligations and a planned generous salary program to match the overall university program.

From the FY20 budget book, pg. 65.  The three major factors contributing to the anticipated 4.7% increase in intercollegiate activities expenditures are compensation, facilities (utilities rates, maintenance), and travel expenses (increasing costs, charter travel for select programs).

Athletics auxiliary operations is comprised of intercollegiate activities, financial aid (all AD scholarships), ancillary activities (rec facilities, some camps, golf course = surplus), and designated activities (camps).
