Risk of myocarditis in student athletes with COVID-19 -
BostonCard - 01-16-2021
I debated whether to post this article, since it doesn't relate directly to Stanford athletetics, but it is relevant to them.

The good news is that the concern about myocarditis in student athletes who get COVID-19 is pretty low; the researchers in this study found 2 student athletes with myocarditis out of 145 student-athletes tested (at the University of Wisconsin). Earlier estimates of the risk of myocarditis were much higher, so this study is reassuring, though it is a non-zero risk.

Surprised that there were 2 of 145--seems a high percentage to me. With so many kids having Covid and being asymptomatic, or with mild symptoms, would have expected it to be much lower. Lots of positives in the pros, with little talk of myocarditis in the players, either.
Thanks for posting, though I imagine the thread will get shutdown as the one regarding youth sports in CA did (not that Stanford is recruiting any kids in CA at the moment, or hoping to play games in SCC).

The only pro I know who developed myocarditis was Tommy Sweeney:
https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/11/23/bills-tight-end-tommy-sweeney-out-heart-condition
Note that the Wisconsin players "had mild (71 [49.0%]) or moderate (40 [27.6%]) symptoms during the acute infection or were asymptomatic (24 [16.6%])." Of the two who developed myocarditis was minimally asymptomatic:
Quote:This patient was initially asymptomatic and tested for COVID-19 as a part of routine screening. At 1-month MRI re-evaluation, the LGE findings were unchanged, but T2-weighted signal abnormalities had improved and the troponin-I level was normal. Clinical follow-up 1 month after the MRI revealed 1 episode of mild dyspnea, but the patient was otherwise asymptomatic.
The other player was initially symptomatic, but asymptomatic at the time of the MRI:
Quote:This patient had mild to moderate symptoms (eTable 3 in the Supplement) lasting at least 3 days but was asymptomatic at the time of MRI.
I know the BigTen required MRI's for student-athletes as part of their COVID-19 follow-up. Based on the article above, so did the NFL (I would imagine that all professional leagues would). But I don't think it was the standard of care everywhere, so there may have been more cases of myocarditis that we never found out about because they weren't tested. Of course, if they weren't symptomatic, would myocarditis identified on imaging be clinically significant?

Darn, did I forget to add "No sports postings" to that board's Posting Rules?

What about Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez? Or was his something else?
