The TreeCast with Troy Clardy: A Decade With David Shaw

RE: TreeCast sits down with David Shaw - donkey687 - 01-21-2021

I enjoyed the episode as usual. Thanks, Troy.  I especially liked to hear David's response on how he has changed as a coach over 10 years. He showed some humility about recognizing what he doesn't know about scheme and adapting it to the current personnel. I also liked his focus on developing leadership.

3 questions for you.
1) Neither Wilson or OSB were mentioned as returning or leaving. Any sense on where they stand? If we lose both, our deepest position may become one of our thinnest.

2) Have you considered doing an episode on the 36 strong movement to save the 11 cut sports with some big names including Andrew Luck and Adam Keefe lending their support to it.  Or are you not in a good position to raise sensitive topics that the administration doesn't want to be raised?

3) Stanford finally evolved its position to find a way to bring in early enrollees as they became more important to recruiting and staying competitive in football. In a similar vein, do  you think Stanford will find a way to bring in more transfers as they are becoming a bigger part of the college football landscape?

It’s so ironic that men’s volleyball has both a transfer from another college plus a JC transfer and have that program in their final year

Men's varsity volleyball has been on a rollercoaster ride for years in the NCAA, with universities adding and dropping the sport.  Today, only Princeton and Harvard have men's varsity volleyball teams.  In the 1974/1975 season, Yale not only had a volleyball team, but they went to the quarterfinals of the NCAA championship, losing to UC Santa Barbara in the first round.  Allegedly, prior to the tournament, the 31-3 Yale team was told that if they won the EIVA, they would be given varsity status the next year.  Alas, it was not to be:

Andy Fishburn from the 1974/75 team transferred to Stanford after his sophomore year at Yale, in the process becoming one of the finest men's beach volleyball players in history.  Fishburn is #12 in the photo below:

And Of course Fishburn’s daughter was a stunning volleyball player at Stanford

Thank you for listening...and reacting!

1. Looks like Wilson is staying (underclassmen had until January 18 to declare for the draft). OSB is not on Stanford's latest roster.

2. The TreeCast has no official affiliation with Stanford Athletics, so it has no say on the show's content. Can certainly explore that down the road.

3. While it was cool to see Isaiah Sanders' contribution last year, I'd still be very surprised to see significant numbers of transfers coming to Stanford, though (grad or undergrad), for the obvious reasons. It's not something I would think Stanford can bank on as a steady way to fill out a roster. But, who knows? I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor from the early-entrant decision. I suspect that will have a much bigger impact on things.

I think the general sense was that St. Brown would be moving on. Not sure why he isn't in the portal yet though.
