WBB: UCLA 70 Stanford 66 -

Preview:
This will be our second meeting of the year. To remind you, the thread to the first game is here:

Since that first meeting, in which we prevailed 61-49, UCLA has conveniently played one game per week, winning all three, since the other game each week was postponed. The wins against Oregon and WSU were by 2 points each--so UCLA is certainly battle tested. They also beat Utah by 25.
Onyenwere and Osborne continue to lead UCLA. After our last game, Osborne has been on a tear, scoring in the 20s every game--she scored just 7 against us (credit Anna Wilson?) Onyenwere has been steady-state, scoring in the same ballpark each game as she did against us the first time (19) except against Oregon, which she single-handedly won with 33 points. Chou and Osborne continue to hover around 40% three point shooting. Emily Bessoir, the 6'4" freshman from Germany, was a surprise against us last game with 15 points, including 3/8 from three point range, although she has not done as well since playing us.
I sense that tomorrow's game is a critical turning point in the season for us. As the first game after the loss and the first game of the weekend, we should be thoroughly prepared. How will we respond after the disappointment in Colorado? If we come out on fire and decisively beat the next best team in the Pac 12, then we will establish the character of the team and can look forward to the rest of the season. If we play with less than full intensity, make turnovers and sloppy passes, take poor shots, and suffer from a shooting malaise, then perhaps we are looking at a team that is less than fully mature.

I am hoping for our team to come out with an attitude.

we're looking for a Bernie cutout in the stands

I'd say we brought some attitude. Our offense was adequate, our defense quite good.
We need to sustain this four four quarters.
Jones with 2 fouls is not good, and Brink I thought had 2 also, but livestats is showing just 1.

We lead 20-15 after the first quarter. After a hot start by both teams where neither side can seemingly miss, we both cooled down, but then picked it up late in the quarter to take a slight lead to end the first 10 minutes.
Tara was quick to pull players after they foul, but unfortunately that did not prevent Haley from picking up her second foul soon after returning.
Even though we are shooting remarkably 40% better from the field than UCLA and Onyenwere is 0/6, we only have a 5-pt lead thanks to UCLA's 3 three pointers and 4/4 from the FT line.
Even though our offense is humming, Tara won't like UCLA's 4 offensive boards.
Fran picks up her second foul, forcing Tara into a smaller lineup with Prechtel as the only big

Cosaro, Bessoir, and Chou are 4/4 from three (between them), and Osborne is a measly 2/4. I guess shutting down Onyenwere is leaving perimeter shooters more room.

6 offensive rebounds to our 0

Stanford's bench has contributed almost nothing on offense. 2 FTs, that's it so far.

We are down 41-36 at the half as we could not stop UCLA's offense.
When is the last time this happened? We are shooting nearly 20% better than the Bruins, but we are down by 5. UCLA has 8 o-boards to our none, and 6 three-pointers to our two. Onyenwere is 2/12, but Osborne is 6/13 and Bessoir is 3/5.
We are in foul trouble with Brink (3), Haley (2) and Fran (2) and hopefully insult was not added to injury with Cam looking like she injured her arm as she was diving for the ball.

Well, the second quarter was a near disaster. Three of our four posts with 2 fouls each. UCLA shot over 50% in that quarter. We are being grossly out rebounded, and have 7 turnovers to their 4. Osborne is playing much better than in the first game. Onyenwere is only 2/12, but at what cost are we defending her? Three of our posts were sitting with fouls.
Given all of that, it is a minor miracle that we are only behind 36-41.
We need to get our starters back in the third and they need to not pick up quick fouls, so we can get some consistency on offense.

How is it possible that we shoot 56% from the field and UCLA shoots 39% and we are losing by 5? A lot of questionable fouls called against our bigs. A lot of turnovers by us. And we get DESTROYED on the boards. Lacie Hull playing power forward is not going to get us a lot of rebounds. Unfortunately with fouls trouble, Jerome at power forward isn't going to get us a lot of rebounds either.

UCLA's big 2 Os also have 2 fouls each. If the refs keep calling this many fouls we will win, because we have more warm bodies.

Bessoir has been a major contributor for UCLA off the bench - 9 points, 5 rebounds, no fouls. She is 6'4", shoots 3s and rebounds tough. When she and Onyenwere are on the court at the same time, they have a mismatch somewhere. Stanford is having trouble guarding them both and keeping them off the boards.

Can someone explain to me why no review of the play where Kiana got elbowed in the head? I thought automatic review, foul called or not. I don't know that it was or was not a foul, but I thought they were supposed to always review that sort of thing.

I was wondering that too.
Well, UCLA is 8/14 from three point range and we are 2/8. That is not going to get it done.
Things had better turn around in a hurry.

I thought so, too.
It's truly bizarre.
