OT: RIP Hank Aaron - BostonCard - 01-22-2021

Just me or does this seem to have been an awful last year-plus in terms of baseball players who have left us?

He was my favorite ballplayer ever since the Milwaukee days

RE: OT: RIP Hank Aaron - Phogge - 01-22-2021

Great wrists. With all their talent the Braves only won one title. Spahn and Burdette needed more help.

I can come close to recalling that entire lineup.
How close am I here?

c:    Del Crandall
1b:  Joe Adcock
2b:  Johnny Logan?
ss:   Red Schondeist
3b:  Eddie Matthews
of:  Wes Covington
of:  Hank Aaron
of:  Bill Bruton

Damned if I can name a pitcher after Spahn and Burdette.

Kills me that if the Giants had offered just a bit more per month, they could have had Mays and Aaron both in the same outfield.

Aaron trivia --

Aaron had only one 3-homer game in his career. Who was the opponent and where was the game played?

More Aaron trivia --

Aaron broke into the Braves' starting line-up in 1954 because a Braves' starting outfielder broke his ankle. Who was that outfielder?

Andy Pafko?

Hulk... Very close, well done. Switch Logan and Schoendienst. Red was acquired from the Giants in ‘57. He shared second with Felix Mantilla.

Terry... Sid Gordon?

RE: OT: RIP Hank Aaron - BobK - 01-22-2021

Bruton in CF

Bob Buhl a pitcher. Worst hitter ever

We have lost an unusual number of all time greats. Not just HOFers. But icons. But they are getting up in years. Willie and Koufax are about the last of the all-timers from their generation.  Koufax is a bit younger.  Willie is 90, I think.

I thought Andy Pafko played shortstop for the Cubs. Where did I go wrong?

OFer. First batter I saw in a major league game

With mixed emotions, I am linking this article.  I clearly recall reading it in 1992, when I used to subscribe to Sports Illustrated. It has remained burned in my memory.  I understand it may lead to suggestions that I leave politics out of this board.  But it is incredibly relevant today, and not just because Hank Aaron.  I have to ask  - more than 46 years after number 715, and 28 years after this article was written - has our nation really progressed?

Sports Illustrated - Hank Aaron can't forget

RE: OT: RIP Hank Aaron - Phogge - 01-22-2021

After further mental review I think Sid Gordon was gone so I’d say Bobby Thomson. Covington not there yet and Pafko was still pretty much in his prime.

RE: OT: RIP Hank Aaron - BobK - 01-22-2021

Some trivia. Who caught Aaron’s 715th HR?

RE: OT: RIP Hank Aaron - Phogge - 01-22-2021

Tom House. I got him out vs SC back in ‘67 when they were ranked #1. He beat us but it was close.

Worked with him on a 60 Minutes piece about elbow injuries and how two pitching gurus were training kids. Spent three days at Dedeaux Field. Great guy who is suffering from Parkinson’s. Tutors QB’s too including Brady.

We have a winner! Well done, Phogge!

Bobby Thomson broke his ankle in a spring training game in 1954, opening up a spot for Hank Aaron in the Braves' starting line-up.

That leaves the question of Aaron's only 3-homer game -- who was the opponent and where did it happen?

RE: OT: RIP Hank Aaron - Phogge - 01-22-2021

Dodgers at Ebbets Field?

Don't know, but he hit on my Birthday, April 8, 1974. My father and I watched it from a great seafood restaurant on the wharf in Portland, Oregon.

The answer is yes.  Tremendously. Still have farther to go.
