WBB: Stanford 86 USC 59 -
81alum - 01-23-2021
Preview:
We had a tough game against USC last time out, and that was when they were without their best player--Alissa Pili, who has been back for two games and is working her way into basketball shape. In our last game Williams was the spark and scored 27 for us, but Lexie and Brink had good games too. We gave Endyia Rogers 26 points, though, and if Pili is coming back strong that will make Rogers all the more dangerous.
The big question, of course, is not USC, but whether our team learns from its defeats or whether that adversity makes them worse. I can't remember a three game skid for Tara. Losing two in a row is rare for her.

Thanks Bob. This from the article stuck out like a sore thumb:
Quote:But another factor in USC’s favor is that the Cardinal have to take on UCLA Friday night, while USC gets to rest and watch and prepare. USC’s schedule game against Cal has been postponed as the Bears deal with COVID-related issues.

Is this a possibility? Everything came so easy for the team in the first few games against relatively weak teams (i.e. UNLV). Expectations might have gone up higher than realistic. Maybe Stanford isn't a #1 team but looked like it against weaker teams.
For example, Jones looked invincible is the early games. Jones looked like she alone could carry the team to victory. Now against touch, physical defenses she doesn't look invincible. Very good for sure but maybe not superstar category.
Maybe Stanford is a #10 to #15 team. I'm ok with that. I thought Stanford played hard against UCLA but UCLA looked like a better team.

Agreed. We annihilated Arizona and beat UCLA and Oregon convincingly, and blew most others out of the gym. We looked like a well oiled machine for a while. Now it looks like we need a lot of oil!
Anyone remember that awesome team we had (was it with Jayne and Nneka?) that went undefeated in the regular season, except on the trip to LA they lost to UCLA and USC--both unranked teams at the time?
I'm hoping this is like that. I don't know how optimistic I can be, though, if it becomes three in a row.

I was thinking about that last night as that was the team that beat Maryland to make their first trip back to the Final Four in a long time and made it all the way to the Championship game... I sure hope that’s the case, but this time actually win the championship game.. I think the defense has been lacking in the last two games but I also hope the refs stop calling ticky tack fouls on Stanford, while letting them get hammered and no calls... Brink can’t even touch anyone without a foul, yet Colorado’s player having game of her life shoves Brink.. and after review do not call a T on her.. the refs don’t determine the outcomes because Stanford has made silly turnovers at the end of the last two losses and also missed free throws... which make the biggest difference. I sure hope they get back on track today and get on a roll.. they have plenty of opportunities since they have game today, Washington State twice this coming week and then Washington a week from now.. brutal but brobdingnagian opportunities!

fascinating that lots of parity (esp in certain conferences) but that ability to turn it on in the second half and at the very end (Louisville, NC State today) is the difference maker. hope we come out today with a major chip to prove ourselves and NEVER let USC in the game. Hope there was a session with a sports psychologist after the last game.

In all of those three games today, the team that was ranked was behind at the start of the 4th quarter.
Cool... #1 wins by 1, #2 by 2, #4 by 4.

So far, the refs are letting A LOT of contact go under the baskets, on both teams.
Our defense is still not looking as strong as it needs to be.
At least we are hitting some threes. Hope that continues.

Watch the female ref's call of foot on the line at 5:19 in Q1. She doesn't look down at the foul line until after the USC player throws the ball up and it bounces out of bounds. She initially spreads her arms to say she doesn't know who knocked it out, and then makes a call as if she were looking.

We are 4/7 from three point range, that and we have limited the rebounding-challenged Trojans to a single O-board, and we lead by 4 after one quarter. We need to sustain both of those keys throughout the next three quarters.

22-18 Stanford at the end of Q1. Not pretty, but lots of offense. Brink has worked well on the boards as expected.
USC looks slow & tired.
