WBB: Stanford 71 WSU 49 (Jan 27) -
81alum - 01-26-2021
Preview:
WSU has never before beaten Stanford, and for years we have wondered when it might happen. This year may be their best chance. Not only do they have a vastly improved team, but due to the dislocation of COVID they get us at home twice in three days. This is similar to how an inferior Cal team beat us a couple of years ago--playing us twice in less than a week.
WSU is, however, not hard to predict. They are led by 5'10" guard Charlisse Leger-Walker, from New Zealand. She has been freshman-of-the-week five times already, and seemed destined to have something like a Kelsey Plum career. She plays practically all of every game, hits threes at 31%, and scores 20 ppg. Her big sister Krystal--a senior--hits treys at 39% and is second in scoring at 12ppg. Bella Murekatete, a 6'3" sophomore from Rwanda, plays center and is third in scoring at 10 ppg and leads in rebounding.
WSU is 8-4 but all four losses have been close--two in overtime, the other two to Oregon by 4 and by 8 points. They have not had a single bad defeat and have been in every game to the end.
Tara has her work cut out for her. WSU is just balanced enough that shutting down CLW--even if possible--is not enough.

brobdingnagian storm moving in but looks like after Stanford arrives today.
The Washington state post looked very good on the game I watched. She spent two years at a JC in Idaho
Make threes Stanford

This seems a favorable matchup for us.
WSU is very dependent on offense from their two guards,
the Leger-Walkers,
and Anna and Kiana, and Lexie and Lacie of course, are exceptional defenders.
Not sure if the sisters are wearing down from their workload--
five overtimes in their last five games, and they average sitting only two or three minutes a game--
but they're shooting .381/.331 over that stretch.
We already push tempo, but Tara may want to do it even more here.
The Cougs are very dependent on the sisters and don't have a deep bench.
And our size definitely will challenge them, and even more if their big,
who has had a Cameron Brink tendency to foul, gets into foul trouble.
Their only other capable inside player is 6'0'.

Hulk, what does "
effective field goal percentage" mean?
I'll take a few more turnovers a game as the price of pushing the pace by a deep team.
Has anyone been watching the other top rated teams? I caught a little of 2 of the top four, but I wasn't very impressed. Maybe those games were like Stanford vs Colorado for their teams.

- eFG% - Effective Field Goal Percentage; the formula is (FG + 0.5 * 3P) / FGA. This statistic adjusts for the fact that a 3-point field goal is worth one more point than a 2-point field goal. For example, suppose Player A goes 4 for 10 with 2 threes, while Player B goes 5 for 10 with 0 threes. Each player would have 10 points from field goals, and thus would have the same effective field goal percentage (50%).

I agree re turnovers--I will take a few as a cost of pace.
But we still have too many that aren't explained by up tempo:
moving screens, botched entry passes,
airmailed throws (Belibi thinking Van Gytenbeek was 6'4" stands out),
and four inbounds turnovers in the course of just two games.
I do think we will learn from these and do agree that our pace is an asset.
And the number of great passes this team throws is impressive--
Kiana recently stands out, and Lexie and Jump have made some memorable
ones recently.
Turnovers--and fouls. Getting only 46 minutes from the combination of Brink, Jones and Belibi really hurt us against the Bruins.
Their fouls deprived of us of our three best defensive rebounders for too much of that UCLA game.

the team would do well to remember the words of John Wooden - be quick, but don't be in a hurry.

Does this mean that she gets as many steps as she wants on drives to the basket?

That is fascinating.
Is there any measure of efficiency which takes into account time left on the shot clock? It seems to me that the "clutch" players are able to score when the clock is running out and the defense knows it is coming, while other players might only be able to shoot well when open earlier in the clock.

I don't think anyone tracks that. It does remind me, however, that Kiana's effective field goal percentage would be higher but for the several times she has been forced to take a shot-clock beating buzzer.
And for 81 alum and perhaps others, here are WSU's effective field goal percentages on the season:
Molina .620 (sixth man; 5.5 pts/game)
Murekatete .535 (10.1 pts/game)
Moluga .481 (8 pts/game)
Teder .478 (5.4 pts/game)
K Leger-Walker .447
(13.9 pts/game; 39.5 minutes per game)
C Leger-Walker .431
(20.2 pts/game; 40.4 minutes per game
Sarver .292
(seventh man; 1.1 pts/game)
As this suggests, WSU basically plays just seven players and relies on four of them for scoring.

ESPN is showing that Wednesday's game is on Pac-12 network but it does not show a broadcast network for the Friday game. Anyone have that info?

Brink starts again, but Belibi replaces her early. Those two are certainly in competition for time on the court. I still wonder about finding a way to get them both out there at the same time.
19-9 after the first. A good all around game. Lexi is having an offensive outpouring with 10 already, going 5/6. BUT we are 0/4 from three point range, so we need to get those heated up if we are going to sustain this after WSU's inevitable defensive adjustments.

19-9 Stanford. No fouls and just 2 turnovers. We have played three post players in the first qtr. not at the same time.
