MBB: schedule and roster update -
burger - 01-27-2021
The good news: The USC games have been rescheduled for Feb. 2nd (Maples) and Feb. 22nd (LA). That's two chances for quality wins.
The bad news: We have 4 games in 8 days coming up: 1/28 @ Ariz, 1/30 @ ASU, 2/2 USC, 2/4 Cal
The worse news: Wills, Davis, and Williams are not traveling to Arizona and won't be available for either of those games. No word beyond that.

Ouch, that hurts. We proved we could win without those 3 against UCLA but it sure makes life harder. We were lucky that no one got into foul trouble. Has there been any indication of William's issue? COVID quarantine perhaps?

Williams went to his Uncle’s funeral. If out I fear Covid

Could it possibly be just a mandatory quarantine because he had to travel outside of the testing protocol? Not as bad as actually being sick.

That was my guess as well. A few days for a funeral + a 2-week quarantine would mean he's out this week, too. Fingers crossed that's all it is.

I think Stanford was helped significantly vs. UCLA by not having to play USC 2 days earlier. The team was rested and looked energized. Don't know how they can sustain that same level over a 4 game-in-8-day stretch without Davis, Wills and Williams. Hope that some will be back for USC and Cal.

If the goal is NCAA or bust, for sure need to win two of the next three, imo.

It's really the good, the bad, and the ugly -- or just the bad and the ugly. Five games (3 of them away) in ten days, most of them, it appears, without 2-3 starters. Even the "good" you mention -- that $¢ game being rescheduled -- really crowds the schedule and makes for one hell of a tough run, made worse by injuries.
I'm still bullish on the team making the tourney, though, which may be more hope than anything. If they could win even five or six of the next 11, get back to near-full strength by the time of the P12 tourney, and then win two more games at least, an invitation seems likely, given the schedule and quality wins. Hoping, anyway.

If the goal is NCAA or bust, missing 3 starters who combine to average 32ppg seems like a very significant obstacle in achieving said goal.
That said, the same team did beat UCLA sooo.....

I think the main thing during this period of attrition is to avoid bad losses. Cal is like 173rd in the NET ratings. ASU is 120. Losing to Arizona (29th) or USC (23rd) won't hurt our Tourney chances, but losing to Cal or ASU would be bad. The injuries excuse will only help so much.
