MBB: STAN 66 USC 72 - burger - 02-02-2021

Another chance for a good win tonight against USC.  I'm optimistic that this is a better matchup for us than ASU because USC doesn't force many turnovers.  They do have 7-foot freshman Evan Mobley, so hopefully Kisunas is up to the challenge and can stay out of foul trouble.

Williams, Wills, and Davis are out again (I'm thinking of changing my sig to that line so I don't have to repeat it).

PS If you are a cord cutter like me and don't have FS1, just go to foxsports.com and you can stream 60 minutes for free.  And you didn't hear it from me, but if you open a different browser for the second half...another 60 minutes.

Thanks, burger. Feels like a big game (because it is). Short of rest, short of starters, short of depth at guard, but they gotta find a way to at least split this series (and hopefully sweep it).

Honestly not a bad half. da Silva barely played but O'Connell and Delaire did most of the heavy lifting. Need to keep it up in the 2nd half and limit Mobley.

Does Kisunas have two hickies on his neck?  Maybe it's from cupping therapy.
Boy, we've got foul trouble.  ODS, Jones, and Angel with 3.
We're sitting on a 3 point lead with 11:35 to play.  12 turnovers and 14 fouls is ugly.  O'Connell with a career high 16 points, but an uncharacteristic 3 turnovers.
2 point lead with 7:35 to play. Jones now sitting with 4 fouls.

Jones, playing with 4 fouls, hits a crucial 3.  Tied up at 64 with 2:18 to play.  We can't defend Mobley, who has 23 points.

We need our 3 starters back to have a shot. Too much to ask for the rest to win without them. Great effort, but an L is an L.

Sure was. Not gonna blame it on any one player -- especially when three starters are out -- but Kisunas needs to be ready for that feed from Da Silva. Ouch. I agree with most that this team is reaching its limits without any of the three missing. Need that to change by the time we get to hosting Colorado in a week+, or else this tourney window will seal shut.

I thought I heard during the broadcast that he was back on campus but now has to quarantine for 10 or 14 days.

I'm more concerned about Davis & Wills. Williams will be back on the court at some point in Feb.

I agree that this was a strong effort.  

My one complaint is that our spacing was terrible.  So many times Oscar or Delaire got the ball in position to drive but the lane was clogged by one or two other Stanford players and their defenders.  I don't think I've ever seen so many aborted drives in a game. 

Anyway, losing this game doesn't hurt our Tourney chances.  But that won't be true on Thursday against Cal.
